This is the tree which, long V-"' ag0 in 1791, Sir Archibald Men- •ijics discovered when he explored " |he wild shores of Vancouver *'*" Island. The tree had no namt ' ; j, find he evidently gave it none. jKot until tee ardent botanical ^ explorer, David Douglas, redis- Covered the tree which now * • fears his name, was this unique •onifer really examined and made known. In 1827 it was taken to England where it be- _____ ame a much-admired ornamental evergreen. From the beginning, Douglas's , tree puzzled, the botanists. It had lb many conflicting characteristics that scientists were at a loss as to where to classify It December,, among the conifers. Eventually it was discovered that there were only three specios in the world, two in western North America and one in Japan, and that the tree which they named False Hemlock with Yew-like Needles (Pseudotsuga taxifolia > wjs neither a yew nor a hemlock, nor was it a spruce or a fir, yet it maintained some of | the characteristics of all four, j This was confusing enough, j but in addition the cones of the J Douglas tree were like nothing anyone had seen. They were oval, pendulous, sofa cones with curious little tliree-pronged flags thrusting from each of the scales. The old botanical name still remains appended to the tree which David Douglas found, but commonly it is known ay® the Dongias tree. In the Christmas trade, however, it i£ known as Montana fir. Its soft, blue-green needles surrounding the upturned twigs may remain on the living tree from five to eight years; and even indoors in a heated house, and without water, the tree may hold its needles from St. Nicholas Day to Epiphany. This characteristic alone endears the Montana fir to all who want the perfect Christmas tree. At its meagerest, a Douglas tree may, be a Una whip of a tree on a Rocky Mountain slope, and at ita best it may rise over four hundred feet into rarefied air, the tallest trees in the world, possess a trunk diameter of ' over twenty feet, bear plates of j ruddy bark a foot thick, and at- j tain an age of 750 years -- not singly, but as a great, almost pure stand of magnificent trees. It is the most valuable and useful timber tree in the West where it replaces pines and harder woods for lumber. Yet it is a beautiful and easily grown ornamental tree for parks and estates over much of America and contributes ypunger brothers as holiday trees to be brought into homes and ornamented with j traditional glass balls and f ea-| toons of popcorn.
