Mistakes that brought about the loss of first place have no doubt been well-covered by the coaching staff so let it suffice to say that the McHenry team gave it away as the result of their own mistakes. St John's basketball team of Johnsburg won the first annual parish tournament by defeating St. Mary's 47 to 30 in the finals Sunday night at MCHS. The tournament, dreamed up and managed by Thomas F. Bolger and sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus, was Highly successful and will undoubtedly be continued on a larger scale as a holiday attraction each year. In the first game the after* noon, the Johnsburg team put on a strong finish to beat St. Joseph's of Richmond, 55-42. While Bob Peisert, Lloyd Freund and Tom Huemann Were the main scorers, it was the terrific floor play and feeding by Dick Hiller that brought victory to the team. Connie Miller and Heelein put on a great try before taking to the bench when the outcome was evident. St. Patrick's appeared to have the class as they jumped into an early lead over St. Mary's, but the whole complexion changed in the last half as St. Mary's dominated the play for a 42-33 victory. What turned the trick in this one was the fact that Don Andreas held John Bolger scorelss in the last half. It was St. Patrick's turn to cheer In the preliminary game In the evening as their grammer school team breezed to a 36-19 victory over St. Mary's. While the loaers were no match for Father McGowan's starting lineup, the crowd had a good time watching the smaller boys get off the bench to show their skUl. In the championship game, it was a case of St. John's team being frisky enough to come back for th<> second game of the day while the St. Mary's team had given all they had in the afternoon. The losers failed to score a field goal in the first half, getting six points on free throws. Boto Peisert continued to show a great eye on long shota in leading the point production for^t^ie Johnsburg team. At the conclusion of the tournament, George Laridn, Grand Knight of the local K. of C. Council, expressed appreciation to all who had joined in making the event a success and preaented a beautiful trophy to the winners for their permanent possession.
