A: Soremouth is caused by a virus. Exterotoxemia or "over-eat' lng disease" is caused by a germ of the gas gangrene type. It usually develops when lambs are fed heavily for fast gains, but it can also kill baby lambs and ewes on rich pasture or over-rich rations. Q: Can these diseases be prevented? Many people know of the need evenings at home under the impression that tney are relaxing. But actually they aren't, as the mind, nerves and muscles remain in constant action through thought and tension. Tension is the contraction of a muscle motivated by a nerve. Relaxation is really the ait of dropping tension. A series of tests, conducted by Or. Edmund Jfacobson of the University 'Of Chicago, showed that the mind can make muscles work throtigh thoughts alone. By connecting electrical instruments to the muscles of patients who were* lying down with their eyes closed, he was able to measure the activity. If told to imagine they were lifting a weight, the muscles of the patient became tense with effort In the same manner, hate, worry and other thoughts cause activity, and spoil relaxation. t Tuiw people generally do more »rk than they have to. They are exhausted at the end of a day, not fcy energy A: Yes. Veterinary science has developed vaccines which protect feeder lambs against both soremouth and enterotoxemia. They are quite dependable when properly used. Q: What Other feeder lamb hasards should the farmer watch for? A: Coccidiosis, wire worms, tapeworms, and bloating are all high on the list in causing losses. Q: Can they be controlled? A: Most of them can be controlled or prevented. Coccidiosis responds to < control measures and medications. Wireworm and tapeworm infestation are curable. Hemorrhagic septicemia, a respiratory disease, can be controlled by vaccination. Bloating can be prevented by giving sheep only clean, sound feed In amounts they can clean-up. Q: What la a good management peogram for newly arrived feeder lambs? A: Confine them to a roomy drylotwith an open shed for shelter. Provide good hay and avoid lush pasture. Provide ciean water and stock salt Isolate any "slow" or sick lambs for checking by a veterinarian to make sure they aren't disease carriers.
