The Wliippoorwill patrol was presented with a red ribbon for superior team work in presenting i prize winning window display, rhe Eagle patrol was presented .vith three blue ribbons for exellence for their display, while 'he Panther patrol .received two ">lue ribbons. Immediately after the court of honor, a first aid and life saving 1 lemonstration, as well as semaphore signalling demonstration, was presented for the guests and parents in attendance. Refreshments were served at "he. close of a very interesting md inforniative evening. Illinois farmers spent approxi mately $2,000,000 in 1953 to | control less than a dozen kinds j of insect pests on three-fourths of a million acres but made a j net profit of $8,500,000 from j their control operations. | TheSe f'.^ures were revealed I by Dr. Harlow B. M i l l s , c h i e f o f ' the natural history survey divi-! sion of the state department of registration and education, to j the board of natural resoures and conservation at its quarterly meeting in the Hlini Union. They were compiled from a qu*»-1 tionnaire submitted to all Illinois farm advisers. The house fly continues to re* sist efforts to control it by DDT,. Mills reported. j "Except for a few ' instances," j he said, "l'esistance to DDT Is! so widespread and of »uch mag- • nitude that this chemical has, about lost its effectiveness for fly control." ' A new baiting technique de- i veloped by the Natural History t Survey last year presents a new 1 and promising method for con- j trol of house flies in closed; places, but it cannot be expected ; to give satisfactory, control in j the absence of good sanitation, ! he reported. Both field and laboratory studies of oak wilt were carried on by the Natural History Survey in 1953 ih an effort to learn more about this destructive disease of forest and shade trees. Some progress was reported in efforts to control the disease with chemical. Dutch elm disease was reported in twelve counties: 183 cases in Champaign " county, 233 iri Coles, forty-two in Douglas, nine in Edgar, two in Iroquois, two in Lawrence, fifteen in Marion, five in Massac, and one each in Crawford, Ford, Jefferson, and Piatt. The disease had been found in Macon, Pulaski and Vemniott oouBtfis in 1952 Dr. Mills also pointed out that improvement of wildlife habitat, benefits hunters as well as wildlife and indicated by his report that in one study area twice as many pheasants were killed during the 1953 hunting season on farms having habitat improvement programs as on farms without such programs. A study in which the Natural IJistory Survey is cooperating with Southern Illinois University disclosed that corn and soybeans ranked first and »econd by volume as food for quail. Approximately 175 different food items had been. consumed by the bobwhites studied. •' f ' " . < > * * - l" ' ' " ' > * '• * f / •'< r~ ? t' 4 . ? / ?; ' Ptgt Fit# It Pays to Advertise In The McHenry Plaindealei BUTCH'S SAVE MONEY ON YOUR CAR Regular check ops mad maintenance by our experts means lower ear costs Mi you!
