Kelley Guardian (Pub. May 20-27 June 3) ^ The retail committee of the Chamber of Commerce recommends that McHenry stores be closed all day Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day. A sojourn to Europe on of music was the highlight of the McHenry . Choral club's spring concert. While beautiful voices blended together in 'harmony singing to a near-capacity crowd in the high school's auditorium on Saturday and Sunday evenings, May 22 and 23, there were those who were taken back to the music heard of their childhood. This reminiscing was good even though some felt a bit of nostalgia. There were many moods interpreted throughout the program, some sad, others gay. When the moods were low,, they were quickly picked up by a spritely and scintillating type of music. - , The program was enthusiastically received by an. appreciative audience. There was no restraint r of zany humor put on by oAr friend Dai* Justen, whose cavorting really, made time. The witty skit of "Josephine," sung by Art Mueller, had Dan busily smoochin' Lorean Jones, and before we knew it -- like a flash -- he was smoochin' Ruth Barger, this heart-throb in his portrayal of the "pescatore" in the "Oh Ma Ma" skit. At the close xof the program, he kissed the clammy fish! Tsk! Tsk! It's a good thing he kissed the gals first! The beer garden stint brought chuckles of approval from the audience. Otto Pyritz had people tapping their feet with the delightful German folk music. Ida Ann Quinlan did a superb job as accompanist. Her Hungarian piano solo was well received -- as was Adele Froehlich's marimba rendition of a Spanish number. Incidentally, Adele is the director of the McHenry Choral club. Roy Redwanz and Phyllis Whitfield sang an interesting duet depicting the delights of ft rendezvous in France. The narrators were Florence Welter, Ruth Barger, Feral Tomlinson and Dan Justen. The program was concluded with the entire group singing a Viennese number. The audience had to suppress the desire W join in the Binging. ' The McHenry Choral cluBf should receive an "Oscar" for' the wondeiful job they are dplnc in presenting these cultural pro| grams -- and for the interest and desire they are creating ill the community, which make^ people want to hear their musltg The special scenery was done by Norbert Mssuch. Ruth. Barge« was the assistant director, make* up was handled by Marge Klehlj lighting by Donald Barger, thp excellent job of staging was done by Earl Conway and Clifford Kiehl. Other members of the cast included the entire choral club, whose names were announced in our last week's issue. If the above strikes you as an unusual challenge you need to read a booklet we just received from a leading company. Entitled, "The Passing Scene," is their annual publication of tiaffic accident data in which statisticians have analyzed the traffic safety picture in 1953. You would learn that 38.500 people were killed and 2,140,000 were injured by motor vehicle accidents lffst year. Leafing through the booklet you would find out why 1953 made tragic Thistory as the most disastrous year for traffic accidents ever experienced. The report makes it clear that most of last year's accidents need not have happened. Most of them were caused by driven and pedestrians who could have prevented the circumstances which led them to disaster. The conclusion is clear and th" challenge is unavoidable. Onlj those who do the driving ant walking can keep the traffic problem under control. Tes. you can help save 38,500 lives in 1954 and can help stop needless injury to 2,140,000 persons. Will you ?
