Some peisons naturally have clearer voices than others, but a hoarse voice is usually lower in tone than a person's normal voice. When hoarseness develops and persists, the condition becomes a symptom that must be investigated, the educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society observes in a health talk. To understand the significance of hoarseness, it is important to | know something about Voice and Its production. The human voice is a complicated mechanism, de- j pending on the fine balance be- ( tween several opposing gioups j of muscles. The nose, the . sinuses, i the throat, the windpipe And the lungs all play a part in the production of voice, but the voicebox or larynx is the center of voice production. It is situated la the center of the neck, and may be located from the outside by a prominence, the so-called Adam's apple. The most important contents • Of the larynx are two ribbon-like i folds, the vocal cords, which can [ be brought together or pulled a- * part, thus varying the space between them. The lungs act as! bellows which force sir through i tike space between the vocal n cords producing sound, and the' jlSemainder of the throat, the nose, and the sinuses provide the resonance. The tongue, teeth and lips mold the sound into words or speech.. If the normal vibrations of the vocal cords are disturbed by swelling, or by "the presence of a growth, a hoarse voice results. Thus, ft can be understood that hoarseness is not an illness in itself, but rather a sign or symp- ^ fctm of a disturbance of the vocal eords in the larynx. More than 100 different diseases may affect the vocal cords •lid cause hoarseness, but some afe more common than others, ftr example, the common .cold. Just as the nose is clogged duriae a cold by the swelling of the inflamed tissues, . 30 the vocal cords may become inflamed and swollen; hoarseness results. , Another common causa of hoarseness is the presence of a 'growth or tumor in the larynx. Such tumors may be benign or malignant. An - example of the benign would be the so-called "singers' nodules,* which occur Jfter prolonged overuse of the oice. In the cancerous type of tumor, however, the cause is not known and hoarsiniass is. usual]v the first and only symptom that a malignancy has developed. Hoarseness results from a number of conditions, ranging f:om the simple excessive cheering at a ball game to the serious hoarseness associated with diseases of the heart and brain. Tuberculosis of the larynx, once a common cause of hoaiseaess, is rapidly being eradicated through the tremendous medical progress in the management of this disease. Hoarseness is a warning signal in a children's disease commonly known as "croup." Because the breathing space is reduced by the swollen vocal cbrds, the results can often be serious and even fatal. When hoarseness persists for more than three or four weeks, a physician should be consulted. Its persistance could be a warning of the presence of any one of a number of conditions. Our voice is a precious channel of communication, and wise is the person who heeds the warning of hoarseness. Its eaily investigation is the one way to forestall serious results.
