Johnsburg picked up another run in the third on a hit by Tom Oeffling and a triple by Melvin Freund. Their 2 remaining runs came in the fourth as Bill Huemann singled and Frett, the pitcher, tripled. Bead Hie Wast AM The Tiger baseball teaii! %f Johnsburg arranged a doubleheader last Sunday without con suiting* the Old Farmers' Almanac. Twas a wicked sun that bore down on the boys but they managed to go the distance for a split on their home grounds. First it was the Crystal Lake Merchants and they edged out 3 to 2 win. The Tigers thi bounced back to beat Fox thrice 6 to 1. First things first so let's see what happened in that first match. Willie Klapperich started and finished for Johnsburg and his catcher was Manager Howie Katz. Barth, regular catcher in early season games, was on the ailing list. Tom Huemann was on a tour so Howie took over the job and did right well. Crystal Lake scored first and, we might add, last. Their first run came in the fourth when Joe Feffer led off with a single to center. Katz threw out Jack Pepping as Feffer moved into scoring position. Brettschneider's hit scored Feffer. Tie it Up The Tigers evened it Up when they came to bat. Dunlap drew the second of his three passes. Comstock sacrificed and Bob Peisert singled for the run. It was in the seventh that both teams scoit d again. Martine batted for Reams and hit safely to right field. Dobler ran for Martine and stole second from which he scored on an infield error. Bill Pierce, who has been doing real good work, with the bat, started off with a hit to right center. Katz placed a hit into right to put Pierce on third and Charlie Hiller sent another hit to right field for the second and last Johnsburg run. Wally Otto came in to pitch for his brother at this point and escaped, trouble when Johnsburg*B bas£j running got foozled up. With one out in the eighth, pepping singled. Telander went in to run. The Merchants played for that one run and got it. Brettschneider sacrificed. Bartelt's hit put Telander on third and pinch-hitter Bruhn drove him home with the victory run. * Pox Lake fflfcte 4 "Hie home team enjoyed better fortune in the second game as Loren Freund and Melvin Freund formed the battery in a 5-hit performance that brought about a 6-1 victory over Fox Lake. In this game,' the Tigers stepped right out in the first inning to give their pitcher a working margin of three runs. "Whitey" Wanhala was the starting pitcher for Fox Lake and was very fast in getting the first batter, pierce then1 hit safely and Katz drew a walk. Hiller hit safely and moved to second on the throw-in as Pierce scored and Katz went to third. Sahs rolled to third for the second out. Then came a break. Richard Freund lifted a high fly to left field and George Jackson made a nice run to get under it. What happened then, we still don't believe. The ball dropped: through Georges glove and two runs came home. Hiller Hustles Charlie Hiller singled to right in the third inning, then turned on some fast, alert base running ^0" go. all the way to third while the defense was throwing the ball around. R. Freund's hit scored Charlie. Loren Freund gave Tip only opk hit until the sixth when Bob Kldfis tripled and scored on George Jackson's single. The Tigers made it safe with two more runs in the fifth, then Selchow went in to pitch for Fox Lake. Four men got on base (three hits and one hit batter) on Selchow, but nobody scored. Credit for Ihis one goes to Loren FreanfO* for pitching a great game. He mixed 'em up in great style and had zip on the ball when he chose to use it. C. JL.
