Among them is Dick Nowak, president for the past two years and De- Kalb award winner in his senior year; Arnold Freund, secretary for the past two years and the only member with the State Farmer degree; Dave Smith, vicepresident and Star Farmer award winner for the past two years. Other members who perhaps served less" distinctively, but who are just as necessary for the Success of any chapter are Bob Comstock, Loren Freund, Paul Hiller, Gene Hughes, Jack Miller, Anthony Schaefer and Bob Schmelzer. Dick Nowak, Loren Freund and Bob Schmelzer are considering higher education; Gene Hughes is in his own tree-trimming business; Bob Comstock has a job with a construction company; and the others are aSl actively engaged in farhiing. To take their place, the McHenry F.F.A. chapter held an election of chapter officers during the last week in May. Boys interested in serving the chapter as officers made written appttca* tion for the job desired and these applications were used by the nominating committee. The elections were all very close and a fine group of interested, young members won the nod. Dick Wissell, an outstanding sophomore scholastically, athletically, musically, and as a farmer, was elected president. Harry Diedrich, by his fine service as sentinel in his sophomore year, moved up to vice* president. Ted Schaefer, another sophomore, wanted and received the office of secretary. John Hogan, an alert freshmen with a good 4-H record, is the new reporter. Mark Zimmerman, an* other hard working freshman with a good 4-H record, is the new treasurer. For sentinel, the race was close between Fred Bowman, sophomore, and Tom Blumhorst, freshman. Finally, Fred, with his strong Ringwoad backing, won the election by one vote. The success and achievements of the McHenry F.F.A. chapter in the future rests on these young men and their ability to keep the rest of the chapter moving. They are capable and deservfe the commendation and encouragement of the community. - r One method that the McHenry F.P.A. chapter has used to* awa'd its members who show the greatest effort in farming programs, fairs, scholarship, and other activities is the annual presentation of six inch or eight inch chenille letter M's (orange) with the small letters FFA embedded in blue. At the 1954 parerit and son banquet, the following members received large letters in recognition for their points earned: Dave Smith, senior; Harry Died- I'ich and Dick Wissell, sophomores. Six inch chenille letters were received by Arnold Freund, senior; Arnold Thelen, junior; Tom Thompson and Dave Young, sophomores; and Tom Blumhorst, John Hogan and Mark. Zimmerman, freshmen. a ^ Civil Defense Test Proved Quite Successful Residence Changes The Joseph Glossons have moved from the home of the late Math Glosson to John street to their new home on Center street. The place they vacated will be occupied by the new owners, the Elmer Glossons, who are moving from McCullom Lake. The Harold Knox family has moved from Crystal Lake to the Knox homestead, near Terra Cotta. Miss Florence Knox is making her home with them. The Edward Kania family has moved from one of the Stilling apartments on Main street to the Wattles apartment building The apartment now occupied by the Kanias was formerly the home of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lofoitz, who moved to the Country Club subdivision. j The civil defense test held in ; McHenry last Monday morning was quite successful in spite of the fact that "operation alert" had not been sufficiently plublicized to warrant 100 per Went cooperation. A county meeting setting forth details of procedure to be followed was held on I Wednesday night last week and as most weekly papers in the j county ar e published on Thurs- I day it was impossible to give full details. As it was, most shoppers "took cover" in stores along the streets and an alerted police force stopped traffic within the city for a ten-minute period after the sirens blew to signal the start of the test. . Edison's invention of the first practical incandescent lamp. Installation of McHenry's new "white way" street lighting ai this time takes on added significance. For the first public demonstration of Edison's electric lamp was in the form of street lighting -- on New Year's Eve, in 1879 when 60 lamps, mounted along the street near his Menlo Park laboratory, were turned on. Today, our ability to do things better, faster and more economically by electricity stems from Edison's work in 1879. LIGHT FOR FREEDOM - POWER FOR PROGRESS Oe PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY
