Judge William M. Carroll gave six people, including James Garrity, 18, of MeHenry, an opportunity to lead a better life when they appeared before him this past week. All were under indictment in the circuit court and had ^previously pleaded guilty to charges against them. Garrity was released on $500 j bond and placed on probation for two years. Restitution had been made in all of the cases heard. AVAILABLE SOON The Post Office department will issue a booklet containing the new 3-cent Statue of Liberty "In God We Trust" stamps through the Washington, D. C., post office, on June 30. 1954. Collectors desiring first-day cancellations of the new booklet panes may send a reasonable number of addressed envelopes, with money-order remittance to cover the cost of the stamps to be affixed, to the postmaster at Washington, D. C. Covers will be serviced only with full panes of six stamps, thus requiring a remittance of eighteen cents for each cover submitted. Postage stamps and personal checks will not be accepted in payment. An enclosure of medium weight should be placed in each envelope and the flap either sealed or turned in. The booklet panes will he affixed vertically in the right-hand side of the covers and a space of approximately 3V» inches square will be required for the stamps and postmark. It will, therefore, be necessary to place the address in the lower left corner of the envelope to allow sufficient space for affixing the pane and cancelling the cover. Since there will toe a wide distribution of stamp books through all post offices, they will not be available through the Philatelic Agency. So far as possible, requisitions from direct and central post offices will be filled in whole or in part with books containing the new design stamp. However, it will be necessary to dispose of remaining stocks of books containing old issue stamps on hand In post offices and the department before the new books can be placed on sale exclusively. The boofcs containing the new 3-cent Statute of Liberty stamps will be available in two sizes; 1 containing 12 stamps that will sell for 37 cents and another containing 24 stamps which will sell for 73 cents. The dairy fa:mers qf America are pledged to make a deduction from the milk checks they receive during June and the funds thus accumulated are used to publicize the dairy industry and to U%e folks to utilize dairy products to a greater extent in their diet. The per capita consumption of milk as such, and in the form of its various products, totals one quart per day throughout the year. If the total consumption could be increased by 5 percent, the much talked of surplus dairy products would vanish in a short time. PHONE TROUBLES The Marengo Chamber of Commerce expressed concern as a groyp in its regular monthly meeting that action for a more adequate telephone service in the city had apparently again "bogged" down. It acted on a motion that steps be taken to learn from the Illinois Commerce Commission why the previous promises of the MeHenry County Telephone company had not been kept as made to the Marengo city council the early part of this year.
