This, and other figures resulted from a study of the employees whose payrolls pass through the Civil Service office. Melt shortening in dutch oven. Split clove qf garlic and add to heated shortening. Add meat balls and brown lightly. Remove garlic. Drain excess fat from meat balls and reserve 3 tablespoons for use later. Pour stock over meat balls. Bring to a rapid boil. Lower heat. Cover and simmer 20 minutes. Add vegetables and simmer about 35 minutes longer, or until vegetables and visible rice are tender. To reserved fat, stir in flour until smooth. Add to stew and simmer 5 to 10 minutes longer. Spring Grove By Mrs. Charles Freund Parishioners of St. Peter's church are making preparations this week for their annual chicken dinner and carnival "which will be held on the parish grounds July 17 and 18. A chicken dinner with all the trimmings, topped off with homemade pie, will be served at noon Sunday and at 5:30 in the evening a cafeteria style supper will be served. Everybody is welcome to sp^nd the day at St. Peter's in Spring Grove next Sunday. Rev. John Daleiden and the ushers met at St. Peter's parish hall on Tuesday night of last week. Paul Weber was their host and after the meeting cards were played. A delicious lunch was served after cards. Members of her club met a* the home of Mrs. Beulah Karls in Richmond on Wednesday afternoon. Games of five-hundred were played and prizes went to Mrs. Peter May, Mrs. Frank Tinney, Mrs. Frank May, Mrs. Alice Van Every and Mrs. C. L. Stevens. A lovely lunclr was served by the hostess. Don White and family have moved to Antioch and the James Brown family of Twin Lakes, Wis., moved in the house vacated by them.
