^Thursday, August 26, 1954 DEPARTMEHT oT~ CONSERVATION HAKES CHANGES Permits For Most Hunting Areas Are Same As Last Year Several important changes have been made in the operation of Department of Conservation public hunting areas for the 1954 season, but the method of securing permits on most of these areas will be the same as last year, according to Director 1 Glen D. Palmer. The department's permit office will open Sept. 1, Palmer said recently in announcing complete details, and hunters should wiite for permit applications from Sept. 1 to 25 inclusive. The lettersu should be. mailed to: Department of Conservation Permit Office, 303 E. Monroe street,, Springfield. In asking for a permit application, each hunter should specify if he or she wants to hunt pheasant or ducks, or both. Application blanks will be mailed back Immediately to every person asking for a permit. The application must be filled out completely and returned to the permit office by Oct. 1. Permits, which are selected mechanically, will be mailed to the successful applicants prior to the hunting dates. Complete instructions will accompany each application blank. Applicants are cautioned against making application before Sept. 1, or after Sept. 25. Those will be discarded. There will be six advance pe~- mit areas for the hunting jf pheasant again this year. They are Chain OXakes, Des Plaines, Iroquois, Green River, Clinton County and Belle River. Only three duck areas will be set aside for advance permits. They are Woodford County, Rice Lake and Anderson Lake. Hunters will be asked to draw for permits each morning at the Sanganois area, and hunting will be on a first-come, first-served THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER basis at Batchtown and all other federally owned lands under supervision of the department along the Mississippi river and near the mouth of the Illinois. The Sparland area will not be operated as a hunting area in 1954, Palmer stated. He said the area has not proved suitable for hunting andr. will be converted "o /liefug'e- use»Aiv > Palmer also said that two public goose hunting areas will be operated by the department in i southern Illinois this year -- one ! ofap proximately 400 acres at j Horseshoe lake, and one of near- I ly 800 acres adjacent to the I Union county refuge. These will I be operated on the plan used at Horseshoe lake last year with drawings for pits and blinds each evening. More complete details on these goose areas1 will be announced later. HAIL TAKES HEAVY TOLL, OF FARM CROPS IN NINETY COUNTIES Page Five Hail has taken a heavy toll of Illinois farm , crops, inflicUng an estimated $12 million in damage this season. He also stated that this loss is only partially covered by insurance. ""Farms1 in some ninety Illinois counties, ranging from JoDaviess in the north to Alexander in the south have suffered from hail storms," Achenbach said. He said this was the largest number of counties hit by hail in the company's history. > "A record number of- 13,000 claims have also been reported to the company,-" Achenbach said. ; The IA A is the statewide Firm j Bureau or ganization. j . "A . survey made by the . com- ; pany shows that hair can? strike ' several times in the same area. ; For example, McLean, Sangamon j and Mercer counties have each had thirteen hail storms to date, | he said. | Fourteen counties have reported ten hail storms and forty-five counties have reported from five to nine hail storms this year. Only twelve IUihoia counties have not reported any hail storms during 1|54, Achenbach indicated: One" of the worst storms this yea: occurred Augi 9, when thirty- six counties were hit, and another Aug. 2, when twenty-nine counties were hit.
