The nurses will review employment standards in the light of current economic conditions and personnel practices in comparable fields. The recommenda-i tions which result, approved by the board of directors of I.S.N.A., will be distributed to employers of nurses throughout the state. The distribution of these recomended standards in printed form is a part of the association's positive campaign to improve working conditions for nurses; The standards will include recommendations concerning hours of work, minimum salaries, vacations, leaves of absence, sick leaves, opportunities for professional advancement, and ^retirement, plans. "There -are., stilt registered professional nurses wprking- in Illinois for $46 a week," said Miss Frances L. A. Powell, R.N., president of I.S.N.A., "While general stenographers average $62 in identical areas, and many of the nurses are working much more than a 40-hour week. The r association - is seeking personnel practices for nurses comparable to those offered- in other careers open to women." Recommended emp 1 o y m e n t practice standards were originally set up by the I.S.N.A. in 1947 and have been revised on three occasions since. The last revision was in 1952. Recommendations , which will be discussed at the 1954 convention -have been prepared by statewide committees of nurses from each, of the four occupational sections involved: General duty nurses, public health nurses, institutional nursing service administrators, and office nurses. "These employment standards will again be recommendations only," said Miss Powell. "The" association is not a union in any sense of the word, and any effort we may make to implement these recommendations will be Compatible with the highest professional ethics." |, ' ihe American .Nurses' association and I.S.N.A; have been <91 record--since 1946 with a cleatcut "no-strike" pledge, stating that, every member's first consideration is care of the patient. "It Is' the sincere belief of the I.S.N.A.," Miss Powell concluded, "that the widespread acceptance and application of these standards will do much to solve the public problems growing out of increased demands for nursing, and that better working .conditions will attract the best of our young women and men to the profession and encourage many capable, inacive nurses to return to active duty, to the end that the sick will find the highest qualiy of care available in sufficient quantity so that patients everywhere will be co'mfortaible and safe."
