Restraint Is a Virtue in Color Photography color pictures. Most beginners tend to crowd too much raw colot into their pictures--violent reds, greens, purples, yellow. They have to learn that a very small amount of color will produce a pleasing picture. For example, think of a sqow scene with a few dark green evergreens and delicatc blu shadows on the snpw. That would be subtle, yet complete and very pleasing. Big splashes of poster paint color may be exciting at first glance, but they don't wear very well. In planning shots it is well to remember that vivid reds and yellows tend to attract attention and are, therefore, helpful as accents at or near the center of interest. Cool dark colors, on the other hand, tend to recede >so that gray-greens, blue-greens, dark blues, are especially useful as backgrounds. Nature will take care of the color arrangement in most of your scenics, but when you can move your subject around to suit yourself, keep color balance and harmony in mind. --Jojro van Guilder \/f ANY users of color film, particularly those who are new at it, tend to see how much color they can get into each picture. The result can be what the writer of the new edition of "How to Make Good Pictures" describes as a "veritable color hash." He was making specific reference to a picture of a pretty girl who was wearing a brightly colored btouse in a geometric print with an equally bright skirt in a flower design. Unfortunately, the model's pretty face was completely overshadowed by the riot of brilliant color in her costume. The same picture woald have been all right in black and white because the printed fabric would have been recorded in shades of gray and would not have dominated the picture. When shooting pictures in color, you have to think in terms of the color in the scene before you. In nature most, of the'color combinations tend to be pleasing and harmonious-- not clashing, garish, noisy--and it offers a good example to follow in setting up your GIVE TIPS ON PURCHASING GOOD QUALITY HOSIERY You've probably seen the new stretchatrte nylon hose that fit any siss of fcot. There^rgb deni<pjr or gauge to select. The oniy thing you need to know is whether the wearer is short, medium or tall. However, because these hose are slightly higher in price, you may also want to buy some of the regular type. This means determining the best denier' and gauge to suit your purpose. Miss Myra Baker, clothing specialist at the University of Illinois, gives the following information to help you decide what type to buy. First of all, she points out that iery knittihg bar. The higher the gauge numer, the finer the construction. Denier refers to the weight of the yarn; the lower the number, the finer the thread. You can easily see the importance of the denier to gauge ratio. The^er j^iijread stitches there should be to' giV& the hose elasticity. For instance, 10 denier should be, combined with at least 72 gauge to be satisfactory. Thirty denier could be combined with 51 gauge, because the greater yap strength will make up for the loss of elasticity. If you need that extra "give" in your stockings, you'll find the higher gauge hose more satisfactory because of their greater stretch-ability. When you buy, remember this, motto: The lower the denier, the higher the gauge." Get, Ready For Winter Keeping comfortable in cold weather requires special precautions, yet many persons overlook this as summer wanes and cool and even freezing temperatures approach. This lack of planning results not only in an increase of virus and other respiratory infections, but also in the afflictions caused by exposure to cold, the educational committee of the Illinois' State Medical society states in a health talk. Temperature of the body is controlled by a mechanical system, Actually the sensation of heat or cold is not due to the change of body temperature, but to a change in temperature of the skin. For example, when the skin has the sensation of cold, involuntary messages are sent to the brain where a device is located that acts like a thermostat. Acting automatically, it helps the body to maintain its own normal temperature. Thus if a person is in good health, the normal temperature may vary from 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit.. It is interesting that man is able to withstand heat much better than cold. Cold temperatures favor congestion or slowing down of the circulation in vital tissues. While the normal mechanics of the body are so set up to withstand temperature change, outside aids are essential. Clothing should be warmer. Unfortunately prevailing styles for women make them especially vulnerable to cold. They are inclined to avoid mufflers, overshoes and warm outer clothing which help keep the body protected against penetrating . cold. If hea'ting temperatures in the home are maintained at a reasonable level, and ftiost persons find a temperature variation from 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit comfortaJble, there is no need to remain bundled up. Excessively high temperatures in rooms' are not conductive to comfort. Sleeping rooms, particularly, should be kept cool. This does not mean that windows and doors should be thrown wide open to admit the night cold. In unusually cold weather sufficient fresh air filters in to assure comfortable sleeping. In contrast, however, care should be exercised to avoid accidents and, even deaths, from carbon monoxide. In sub-freezing temperatures, some persons are inclined to warm up their automobiles in closed garages, or "Cgr Junes" By Jusien gauge refers to the number of stitches in 11/2 inches on a hos-1 Real Value! Numerous accidents^ can be prevented if care is taken on icy streets and stairs. Carelessness is a major factor in the increase in accidents at any time, but in winter nature plays a role by creating obstacles with heavy snows and freezing temperatures. In winter, too, the body demands more energy producing foods. The tissues use more oxygen during exposure to cold. In cold weather blood flow diminishes through the skin; "sweating is reduced, if not completely, at least to a minimum degree. Help by wearing suitable apparel and eating well-balanced meals to provide energy, "fams you can help your body resist infectious "bacteria and withstand the penetrating cold of winter months. WATERFOWL SHORTAGE Although the Illinois waterfowl shooting season opened Oct. 22, mild weather and a shortage of water in the southern part of the state, particularly in Union county, served to some extent as handicaps to sportsmen. Director of Conservation Glen D. Palmer said his department' is operating three big pumps in Union county in an effort to accumulate enough water to attract any migrating Canada geese coming that way. Opening of the public shooting area there has 'bfeen postponed for a few- days. Water is plentiful all along the Illinois river valley and the department's three permit hunting areas, Woodford county, Rice lake and Andei son lake, should provide good shooting. Palmer said. Large num'bers of ducks and geese are reported in Canada and in states north and west of Illinois, and good flights of migrating waterfowl are expected when colder weather comes. rpipson lraffic Safety CHARLES F. CARPENTIER Secretary of State This "Tip on Traffic Safety" is aimed primarily at the "Younger Set"--the bicycle riders. Illinois law specifically states that bicycle riders are subject to traffic rules and regulations (Section 24, Uniform Act Regulating Traffic), but many of theni pay little or no attention to the rules. Bike riders are required to observe stop and go signals, stop IARDEST BUSIEST CHEAPEST WORKERS LN TOWN PLAINDEALEI^ WANT ADS , signs, traffic lanes and pedestrian rights just the same as automobile drivers. In other words, a bike rider approaching a traffic signal with the red light on is required to stop and wait for it to turn to green before crossing the intersection. A bike rider is required to come to a complete stop at a Stop sign. He is required to keep to the right, and to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians when making turns. While you are still a bike rider, get accustomed to traffic safety practices. It will be very useful to you when you become an automobile driver.
