Seventy McHenry county farmers and their wives lyere among the 5,000 present as the statewide Farm Bureau and , its "affiliated companies presented a program that featured a talk by the Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson. Adoption of resolution's today and the annual address by the popular IAA president, Charles B. Shuman, Wednesday afternoon, also attracted many farmers to the meeting from the county, Viigil Smith, secretary of organization for the McHenry county Farm Bureau, said. Playing prominent roles were Miss Marilyn Lindvall, Earl M. Hughes, George C. Minot, Miss Vera Dahlgren, Carol Lou Rattray and Carol Olson. Hughes, one of the country's leading economists and an outstanding farmer, resigned from his position as director for the first to eleventh districts, to devote more time to a part time position he has accepted with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. The Woodstock farmer has been one of the key leaders in the rise of the Illinois Farm Bureau to its present eminence as the largest state farm organization in the nation. Minot, Harvard vocational agriculture instructor, was one of the men honored for tv/enty-fjive years of service to Illinois agriculture. Service includes work in farm adviser, assistant farm adviser or vocational agriculture positions.' Vera Dahlgren of Woodstock represented the district in the rural youth meet. Miss Rattray* and Miss Olson were district winners in the talent contest and competed with other district winners from throughout ttoq • state. Greater emphasis was placed on marketing efficiency in the commodity conferences, Smith noted. The dairy conference Monday concentrated " on helping farmers do a better job of marketing their product, and the advent.of bulk tank pick-up and bulk tank storage were given as examples to show dairying is making progress.
