Wednesday, December 28, ISSi*? THE.McHENRY PLA1NDEALEB HEALTH TALK Sleep Essential To Good Health 'Oh! for a good night's sleep!" Sow often have you heard the renark and, indeed, made it yourself? Why? Because you arose from bed feeling tired, restless, md full of tension, and feeling too, perhaps, you hadn't had any rest it all. How much sleep should you nave? It varies>in individuals, tout an* average of eight hours is a ?ood yardstick, the educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society points out in HEALTH TALK. What issleep ? The dictionary defines it as that period of rest for the body and mind, during which volition and consciousness are in partial or complete abeyance and the bodily functions partially suspended. While the required hours of sleep vary in individuals, the rest is essential to good health. Some persons fare very well on a few hours of sleep, while others require more than the average eight. Tlfe type of sleep also playis a role in the amount of rest. A restless sleep, interrupted frequently by fitful periods of wakening, is not conducive. to good repair of body'tissues. A good, sound sleep provides complete recovery from previous fatigue. Less than the conventional seven or eight hours of sleep proves, in most cases, wearing. The result is not only a haggard face but a strained disposition. There are mar.y persons who, dtherwise normal, believe they require more hours of sleep, anywhere from ten to twelve hours. As a rule, the healthy person who wants an unusual amount of sleep is not suffering from mental exhaustion, but from lack of Exercise and sluggish digestion. In fact there are some authorities who believe that oversleeping is just as bad as overeating. Since sleep is essential toa good health, giving the body opportunity to rest emotionally and physically, every effort should be made to induce body-building hours of slumber. Good Sleeping habits should be established. Freeing the mind of all care and worry is one step. Problems cannot be solved by restless' thrashing about in bed. A mind, refreshened toy a quiet sleep can cope with the exigencies of everyday life with more logical application. Room temperature is important in sleep. A temperature that is too warm or too colcf for the individual can be an obstacle. Fresh air Is important, but this does not mean that the sleeping room should be exposed to cold blasts of winter temperatures. Bed clothing should be comfortable, as should sleeping apparel. The type of sleeping garment Is an individual matter. There are some persons who like woolen pajamas, for example, while others actually prefer to sleep "r!aw." Sleep inducers should be avoided. These are but crutches for a normal pattern of sleep. Many sleeping .pills and powders, unless taken definitely under medical supervision, are habit-forming. The user depends on the sleep inducer for rest instead of seeking medical hel^p to free him of his insomnia. Help yourself to a good night's sleep by training yourself to good sleeping habits. Then you can wonder tomorrow why you were so worried today. NEW APPROPRIATION The state administration will seek a deficiency appropriation from the new general assembly to cover needed increases in schoQl aid payments. The last session granted appropriations of $139,888,000 for such purposes, a new record, but if this amount is not boosted soon certified claims of various school districts cannot be mat fully. State Rep. Paul Powell (D, Vienna) may introduce a t^ill in the 1955 legislative. session to boost the sales tax an additional penny to raise funds for schools and mental hospitals. The county superintendents of highways throughout the state would like to have another ceint added to the motor fuel tax in order to secure moire funds for county road work. Both proposals will not be too popular with state officials seeking • re-election in Savings Invested in Ciystal Lake pavings and Loan earn 2'/2% plus l/2% extra. 2S-tf GLAD THAT'S OVEBI You've probably paid that abeut Christmas-shopping expeditions many timed: No need' to, this year! "If you're blessed with artistic talent, so much the better," says Miss. Kaye King, one of the nation's leading gift wrapping stylists. "But anyone, talented or otherwise, can create Christmas gift packages that will be remmebered for a long time simply by treating each gift individually:" A gift that frequently presents a wrapping challenge is that of a Jar of home-prepared food. Jars and bottles can be wrapped attractively as bells, Miss King suggested. First, cut the' base of the jar and center this disc on a sheet of foil gift wrap. Put the jar on the disc, and. bring the ends of the paper to the top and tape. With the hands, mold and crush the heavy foil to produce a bell shape. Top the package with a fluffy bow. Men's gifts often can be wrapped to resemble a shirt, Miss King said. The gift box can be covered In a gray gingham gift paper, collar and shirt front from white paper, and a necktie from wide red ribbon. If you're troubled by a cylindrical gift, try wrapping it as a Santa Claus. The lower section of the cylinder is covered first in bright red gift wrap, and a buckle* J belt cut from black paper is added. Use. gummed foil stars for the eyes and a small Christmas tree ornament for the nose. A wisp of cotton batting becomes the beard and hair, and a conical hot of red paper tops the merry package. T ..... For a smart decoration, Miss King suggested the new readymade package decorations, which dress up any Christmas package. Three-dimensional gift trims sua available in the form of many popular symbols of the season-- Santa Clauses, snowmen, reindeer and the like. They are especially effective, she said, „on solid color gift wraps. , Almost any package can be enhanced with ribbons and bows. Miss King declared. Choose your ribbons carefully to harmonize or contrast with the colors of your gift ..papers," she said. And, key the width of your* ribbons to the size ot your package, using narrow ribbons only on smaller packages. The wider ribbons, she said, are much more effective. SECRETARY OF STATE URGES MOTORISTS TO BUY LICENSES EARLY Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier has urged motorists to get their 1955 license plates immediately, either by over-thecounter purchase in Chicago or Spnngfleld, or by mail application. Secretary Carpentier especially asked residents of the Chicago and Springtield areas to take advantage of the over-the-counter service for three reasons: It eliminates delay thiough the mail, it provides the motorist with a receipt to substitute for his registration card imtil the card can be sent to him, and it lble errors in the application and get them corrected while the applicant is present. , After 'the rush of business on the first day of over-the-counter sales, volume has dropped off abruptly, Mr. Carpentier said, and applicants can get their plates now with a minimum ot waiting in line. In Chicago, the office is located at 334 South Ashland boulevard and in Springfield,- on the second floor of the Capitol building. Concerning mail applications; the earlier they are received, the earlier the plates can be mailed, Secretary Carpentier pointed out. Minnesota boasts the greatest water area of any state.
