Don't Put Family Snapshots Off Until Tomorrow 'TOMORROW is definitely too late for picturing people as they are today. There are some varieties of family snapshots that you definitely shouldn't put off taking. Among these are the family fgroups, the four generation snapshots. Sometimes in our concentration on picturing the small fry and how they grow, we tend to forget about the grown-ups in the family. They belong in the family picture record* too. Picturing the oldsters and the youngsters together is something that can be fun, and at the same time produce snapshots that will become family treasures. Of oourse, when it comes to picturing a family group, it is always important to have a center of interest-- something that all of your subjects can focus their attention on and not look at the camera. In taking the three or four generation pictures that should be a part of every family record, the representative of the youngest generation makes an excellent center of interest. Group the adults in a comfortable manner and let them be admiring the baby. Nothing could be more natural--and because of that it ought to be a sure-fire means of getting good expressions on the faces. When you have a group like that together, don't take just one picture--the subject is too important to take any chances. Shoot several and you are bound to have at least one exceptionally good picture, and you'll probably have a whole series. --John Van Guilder <• » MYF News If you happened to drive down Main street last Sunday night you probalbly had to squeeze through all the cars parked by the church. We had over 200 from Barrington, Zion, River Grove, Woodstock, Cary and Wauconda at our meeting. Sue Stinespring and Dick Wissell led group singing and Dale Johnston led the worship service. An offering was taken and was given to our speaker, "Pop" Coats, for temperence work in Chicago. When Sue introduced "JPop," he came out in a cowiboy outfit withi.gi*nak ehaps, hatband boots arid proceeded to tell us his life as a cowboy in Texas and Oklahoma. He had a collection of sixshooters and told a story about each one. It was very interesting but I wondered how it had to do with our-subject of alcohol Then he asked if we had seen a cowboy movie. Of course everyone ihad and1 in every one there usually is a scene with them lined up at the bar. To a cowboy this looks terrible because in the old days if a person drank he would soon be "Trifles Make Perfection, * And Perfection Is No Trifle" * (Author's name below) Perfection iin the compounding of prescriptions has been our continuous goal for many years. PRESCRIPTION CHEMISTS • Quotation by Buonarroti 1564 Mumps Because mumps, usually occurs between five and -fourteen, it is usually classified ^ among childhood diseases, but actually the condition is more serious and prevalent than is realized, the. educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society states in a health talk. Caused by a virus, the smallest type of infectious agent, mumps affects primarily the parotid glands, in front of the ears. These glands, with others under trie tongue and lotaver jaw, produce saliva. When infected, they enlarge. The most notable signs of mumps are marked swelling together with high fever, which runs for four or five daiys.. In some cases theit- is considerable pain, usually on one side of the face and the area is tender. The swelling appeaoB from twelve to twenty-six days after contact or exposure to the disease. Frequently both sides of the face are involved, although it is quite common for only one side to be affected. The difficulty of eating and talking seems to be the chief immediate complaint of mumps victims. It is estimated that at least thirty percent of the American population have had mumps at some time or other without being aware of it. This may be the reason why the disease is epidemic and why victims who do manifest the symptoms of pain and swelling are unable to identify their contact. While few persons die from the disease, special attention should be given to the mumps patient, as long as fever and swelling are present, the patient should be in bed, even thoughthere is no serious complaint of discomfort. ' Complications sometimes associated with mumps may result, particularly in the adolescent and adult, in serious involvement of the sex glands, an occasional cause of sterility. In this group of patients, there is usually more pain and fever and swelling of the reproductive organs of the body. The complication does not occur in children before puberty, that phase of maturity when the reproductive organs begin to function. One of every four adults with mumps has some form of complication. While mumps has been' known to recur, usually an immunity seems to be established by the first attack. However,, when only one side of the face has5* been affected, there is always the possibility of the other being infected later. Because of the highly contagious character of the disease, patients with mumps should be isolated. Liquids and semi-solid foods,, free of acids, should be substituted for solids to eliminate the pain of chewing. Little can be done for the patient with mumps except to keep him comfortable and warm, since the disease seems to be self-limited. In some cases and in those weakened by other diseases, treatment serurti. may "be used. In certain conditions where the pain is aculte, certain sedatives can be prescribed by the physician to permit the patient to r tumps should not be treated lightly. At the first complaint, buried on boot hill. "Pop*' had a church right near Skid Row and one day he put on some old clothes and lived among the drunks. He found people who had been lawyers, educators and people of great tespect. Afterward we had cookies and pop and got to know some of the kids from other ai.Y.F.s. We plan to see them next week when we go to mid-winter meeting at Libertyville Saturday and Sunday. McHenry, Illinois February 4, 1955 Phone 160 'Gar Tunes" By Jusien wg ACA^P; SPELLBINDER Have you ever been envious ot your friends who can do card tricks? Well, you can stop brooding about it, tor here's one that doesn't re* quire mirrors or sleight-of-hand and yet will prove puzzling and enter* taining for your audi* ence. It's called S P E L L BINDER and it's really as easy as opening a new deck of cards: Use a l l 13 cards of any one suit Put the remainder of 4he d e c k aside as you w i l l n o t need it Now arrange your IS cards in this order: S, 8, 7, A, Q. 6, 4, 2, J, X, 10, 9 and 5. When you are finished hold them face down ip your left hand. The three-spot should fee on top, face down, and the five spot on the bottom. All of the cards, in fact, should be face down in your hand. THE TRICK: To discover the location of each card from Ace to King by spelling out its name or number. Here's how it works: You begin by spelling A-C-E. As you say the letter A, take the top card and slip it, face down, to the bottom. For the letter C, take the second card and slip it to the bottoip. For the letter E, the third card goes to the bottom. Then turn up the next card on the table. It will be the ACE. Leave the ACE on the table. Next, spell out T-W-0 in exactly the same manner, slipping a card to the bottom of your pack with each letter. Then turn up the next card, which will be TWO. Place it on the table and go on to spelling out T-H-R-E-E for which you slip the next five cards to the bottom, then the FOUR, FIVE, etc. But always remember to remove' the located card from the pack after you've turned it up. Wlien you've finished, you will haye spelled out the location ot every card from ACE to KING. It is possible, by using' the same plan for each suit, to arrange all 52 cards so that the locations of ail can be spelled out Try working it out by spelling out the suits as well as the numbers, such as "A-C-E O-P S-P-A-D-E-S," etc. ROADLrrriNa The first state road lettbif tinder Governor William '• C.
