The boys went over to Libertyville Friday night with a revised lineup and came through in grand style. The big test came the following night when the Crystal Lake Tigers came to McHenry. The most loyal follower could hardly figure the Warriors to win that one. But, win tihey did -- by a 2-poirit margin in a heartstopper. When a team loses, the easiest out is to blame the coach. So let's be fair and tip our lids to Coach Cliff Fulton for bringing his team through the woods. Had Danny Green and Dick Joosten been available from the start of the season there is no telling how far this team could have gone. Both boys have natural ability beyond the average. feut at no time have we had full strength available for one rMBon or another. Joosten is available now. We hear that Green la In the sunny South. Everybody knew that Yokley Would be lost at the end of the first semester. That was enough. Fulton has had to meet the changes and certainly put together a combination tlhat gave him their best the past week. that they planted kisses on Fulton's ciheeks when the final gun sounded. Down in the shower room there was some goodnatured kidding going on about it' that brought a clever retort from Coach Cuda -- "Trouble with me -- I win too many." jThe Cuda boys had won over Crystal Lake in the preliminary glume by 3 points in a real fine effort. Cuda teams have enjoyed fine success. But, of course, those boys are earning their sjtars and working their way up to' top billing on the varsity to him by the local American Legion Post? It's a rare item. SUBTRACTION BLUES Americans are peculiarly impressed with statistics ... and! these statistics are peculiarly impressive. DAIY PINUPS: Happiness is not an export or an import, but an integral part of human relations. Called to the fore are magic forces, when men are thrown on their own* resources. They who take a lot for granted may be literally losing ground. Patience is wisdom in a capsule. Spilled milk is the equivalent of water over the dam. ^Straight ideas do not issue from biased opinions. , Popularity may be a passing? 'Now comes Woodstock! Those fancy ^ Passing fighting Warriors mean business ®y. in this one. The Streaks beat them in league play and in the county tournament. Woodstock will be here Friday night and we look for the real old-time rivalry to loom up. . Well just betcha tihat Coach Rctokie is giving this game special attention. He has had his team up for some games this year. This will be one of those games. Next Tuesday Hebron will be here. This is a non-conference game, but an important one down through the years. The Doran-Thomas combine stopped us Saturday night to question our reference to meeting Antioch in the regional tournament. "Did we mean that Antioch would be easy?" No -- a thousand times no. Do we look like we have holes in .-our head ? Those are merely shiny spots you see. Anonymous. JUNIOR VARSITY WINS 47-31 GAME AT LEBERTYVn.T.E Coach Cuda's J.V. team had to work hard, but came to the finish line with a 50 to 45 win over Crystal Lake to please the home crowd Saturday night. Free throws almost tossed the McHenry team for a loss. The visitors picked up 21 points from this line while the locals had 8. In the field goal department McHenry had a wide edge, 21 to 13. The Cuda boys had to' show their mettle in this one as the Patzke Photo Reading left to right you see Tom Thompson, Dick Bates, Claude McDermott and Jeff Moss all winners for MCHS in tijeir weight class in the recent conference wrestling tournament held in McHenry. Coach Wheeland has done a creditable job in bringing, wrestling to the front in our local high school, giving many boys fine training and an opportunity to participate in a sport to their liking. The loyal fans had seen their Warriors win by a* score of 61 to 51. The Warriors led at evefy quarter mark, but had the scare of their lives in the last period when the home team put on a great try that brought them within 4 points, 54 to 50. Let's not talk too much about point making, since some of the boys, with lower totals carried the fight with equal effectiveness and fed the ball to their up-front mates. This was a team victory. -* Coach Fulton used only one substitute, Wally Dahl, and! this proved out real good. Dick Joosten had 4 fouls so Wally took over for a while and gave his best showing of the season. Dick returned in the final quarter and lasted until the game was safe igith 10 seconds to go, ^ Tom Oeffling, aided greatly by some new eye glasses, led the way to a 16-9 lead in the first, quarter. The home team had plenty of shots, but couldn't hit worth a whoop. Jensen scored 4 straight free throws, missed one in the second quarter, then went on to sink 6 more^v McHenry led 31 to 24 at half time and moved to what looked like a good lead, 52 to 38, at tftie end of three quarter^. Right here is where» Libertyville put on a bristling full press that gave the Warriors trouble and their followers fits of nervousness. The theory that you can not dribble through a press seemed to prove out in this case. The press game brought.fouls and McHenry scored 7 out of 11 free throws in the last quarter to wind up with a good margin of victory. Warriors (61) B F May 4 7 T. For the second night in succession our MCHS Warriors rose to the occasion and stout- heartedly earned victories over favored opposition in the North Suburban basketball league. In a separate story you will find that -the boys beat Libertyville. In this report you will be assured that the home boys really pulled a big surprise in turning back Crystal Lake 56 to 54 in our home gym Saturday night. It is hard to start at the beginning where all good reports must start. The picture of the finish lingers so vividly. With the final buzzer, Coach Cliff Fulton bounded four feet off the floor. His boys gathered 'round with joy they hadn't experienced all season. Nifty little cheer leaders were never happier. It was their victory, too. And the crowd swarmed out on the floor, some wondering if it were true, others half choked with emotional strain and unashamed of the kind of tears that come only with joy. Crystal Lake came to town with high rank. They had won the county championship and had been defeated only by the seemingly invincible Barrington Broncs in conference play. The Warriors came out fighting and took an early lead only to see It fade to the short end of an 18-14 score at the first rest period. The Tigers had begun to find their strength and seemed to have hit stride as the half ended in their strength and seemed to have hit strfde as the half ended in their favor, 28-22. Tom Oeffling, a greatly improved marksman with his new glasses, dropped in three baskets in the first quarter, but had to be lifted in the second period when three quick fouls were called against him. Big Third Quarter Coach Fulton must have given his boys some good ideas between halves. They went right back to their chores with confidence and out-scored the visitors 23 to 15 The McHenry High wrestling squad were hosts to Crystal Lake last Monday night in the last home match of the season. It appeared that the ref goofed on an over-and-back decision Nowak got a technical foul for telling him so. Olson made the point to tie the game tighter than a drum. Little John Huff was a big man moments later as he sank the clincher. In fact, John was a big man all the way with his uncanny ability to' come out of the scramble in possession of the ball. Those last few seconds were hours for McHenry fans, but Ron May's great height came into good use in helping control the ball. - « To say that McHenry players and-fans were happy in victory is putting it mildly. They had beaten one of the best. McHenry (56) B F P May 2 2 1 T.
