Erv Zilly is a great sports fan, but when it comes to setting 13 box scores in one issue •his interest suddenly swings to dominoes. - You will find tournaments and various sports events covered in separate stories. This space comes last and picks up the loose ends. They had some pretty, cute entertainment at the Forester basketball tournament last Sunday night. We gave you the names and acts last week. Those kids were good. Heir that Ray Miller is the president of the county baseball league this year. Ray has always taken great interest in the league and has been around long enough to know the problems. , We hope to see eight teams In the league this year. Note to George Sullivan: How about stirring that Woodstock bunch into action ? We have two reasons, George. One is that we like to beat Woodstock. Another is that you have nice shade trees around your diamond. Old sports writers never die, but they could' melt away under the Bummer sun. The McHenry Shamrocks are going to prance out in new suits this year, thanks to several civic and sports-minded business men. We seem to be drifting into baseball thoughts as basketballs head for the last bounce. If we can believe what we read in the papers, the Cubs have 23 pitchers and at least 15 of them are sure fire big leaguers. *' Our poor White Sox are tabbed as no better. Richards gave the pennant to the Yankees ' and Cleveland pulled the master Stroke in getting Ralph Kiner. We kiner think Ralph ia a scholarly fellow who will #fod uj9 nt t$e Cleveland front office after he burns up their outfield. ST. PATRICK FIVE TAKES SECOND *N DIOCESE TOURNEY The St. Patrick's grade school team travelled to Sterling last Saturday to play in the Rockford Diocese finals and lost a heartbreaker to St. Mary's of Sterling. The nine point difference in score did not materialize until the game was just about over. St. Pat^s led at the half 23 to 20 and were behind at the threequarter mark by three points, 32 to 29. The superior height of iSt. Mary's finally took its toll in the final minutes. The Sterling team has now won the tournament four years straight. Matt Eichinger with 13 points and Jim Conway with 8 led St. Pat's. The entire team played real basketball. Jim Conway played the entire second half under a handicap. He was charged with four personals in the first half. The game was really described perfectly by a visiting priest, who said, "It was just a case of a pretty fair big team beating a darn good little one." To get to the finals, St. Pat's had to beat a very good St. Nicholas five from Aurora. St. Nick's had not been beaten all season. St. Pat's had a five point lead at the half, 22 to 17. The final score was St. Pat's 42, St. Nick's 25. Jim Conway scored 9 baskets and 4 free throws to lead St. Pat's. Anonymous Next Monday evening, March ?» at 7 o'clock, two interesting basketball games will be played at the high school and are free of admission charge. F.F.A. members will play a group of intramural players, after which the Ultra-mural champs will take on the men faculty members. One of the closest and fastest games of the year took place in MCHS gym last Friday night when the Junior Warriors nipped Zion-Benton 46 to 45. After trailing by two points at the half, the Cuda team came up to a tie at three quarters, then gained the edge in the final period. Scoring was well divided in a FORESTER STATE TOURNAMBIT w -vt FEATURES TWO OVERTIME GAMES ' *• * AND SWINGS INTO 2ND ROUND & The 9th Annual C.O.F. State Basketball Tournament is off and a-wingin'. The whistle blew for the first game in MCHS gym at 1 o'clock last Sunday afternoon and activity continued until about 10 o'clock. Many old faces were seen, some new, all with the same old spirit of friendly rivalry. The opening game was a lulu for action. The Johnsburg Juniors overcame a 4-pojnt lead in the closing minute for a tie that sent them into overtime with St. Mary's of McHenry. Paul Steffan came througih like a real champ in this one, scoring 12 points and the clincher, to give St. Mary's a hard-earned 18 to 17 victory. H. Hetterman's fine play and ability, to swish in his free throws stood out. St. Gregory Rangers used a well-balanced attack to breeze along to a 46-24 win over Barzynski. The winners had good size and appeared to have played together before. St. Gregory Seniors kept pace with a 35 to 24 win over St. Raphael. Cacclappo's 17 points made the difference in this one. The next game was between St. Mary's (McHenry) and St. John (Johnsburg) Rangers. And here we go again! This one took two overtime periods to settle. Jim Huemann sank a sharp one to tie the game at 28-all as the regular time ended. He sank another in the first* overtime only to, have his points matched by free throws by Bob Hauser and Dennis Conway. Jim lost on fouls after a great effort. In the second overtime (sudden death first two points) Bill Weber made a free throw in this spot. It was his 15th point of the game. The sudden death followed as Dennis Conway missed a free throw, but grabbed the rebound and sent the ball through the nets. Roll'em Up As in all first rounds, some games are bound to be on the uneven side. The East Moline five, under St. Anne's banner, really rolled up a score to completely* smoother Holy Ghost 110 to 42. The St. Anne team has size and scoring. punch all the way tihrough the lineup. This is once again the team to beat in the Heavy weight division. St. John's Heavies of Johnsburg played good basketball in beating St. Joseph's of Elgin 64 to 47. Johnsburg piled up a first half lead of 38 to 15, giving their subs a chance to take over a period. This team will give 'em all a battle with a little more bench strength. While this game , wfts , fast, rugged .and clOse, it • lacked smoothness on the offensive side. Both teams seemed tense at the start and missed many shots. McHenry led 11 to 8 at the end of the first period, then came the death blow. The home team scored only two points in the second quarter, Tom Oeffling sinking two free throws after six minutes of scoreless effort. Zion picked up 11 points in this quarter on two baskets and seven free throws. The Warriors bounced back in the last half, but made too many mistakes. Passing, poor timing on rebounds and' all-around play left much to be desired. Daniels did a terrific job ' against McHenry's tall boys under the basket while Emanuelson hit from outside too often for local purposes. Another boy who helped the visitors was Martinez after taking over- when Nelson fouled out. McHenry followers knew that the Warriors were in there trying.
