Twelve THE McHENRY PLAIUDEALER Thurbdfty, March 17,1955- Wonder Lake News By Tuene Sells Legion Party The American Legion is having a combination St. Patrick's party and Legion birthday party March 19 at the American Legion Home in Wonder Lake, beginning at 10 o'clock. There will be free corned beef sandwiches ' and salad. Everyone is welcome. Come and have a good time. First Nighters Among the Wonder Lakers seen at the opening night of the play, "Bell, Book and Candle," given at Ye Olde Opera House in Woodstock last weekend, were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Noren and Dr. and Mis. Donald Sturm. fiarden Club The Wonder Lake Garden club met for the first time this year at the home of Mrs. William Fiala, Sr. Mrs. Mary Alice Condren called the meeting to order at 8:30 and had the minutes read by Mrs. Leo Harteg. Mrs. Dorothy McEachren gave a report on a lesson in flower arrangement for the table, which she attended at the University of Illinois during Fai-m and Home Week. Later, colored movies of Mrs. Condren's trip to Europe were enjoyed. Mrs. Jane Setzler was a guest at this meeting, which was attended, besides those mentioned above, by Mrs. Anne Nagel, Mrs. Vee Switzer, Mrs. Arthur Pinnie, Mrs. Marie Milbrandt, Mrs. Violet Kopp and Mrs. Clark Griffith. Strawberry shortcake, kolachen tea and coffee were served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Marie Milbrandt. Hospital Auxiliary News • Three new members are welcomed into the ranks of the Wonder . Lake Hospital Auxiliary of the Memorial Hospital for McHenry County. They are Mrs. Laura Wellov, Rt. 4, McHenry; Mrs. Helen A. Coupe, Rt. 1, Ringwood; and Mrs. Louis J. Schustik, Rt. 3, Woodstock. It is hoped that a number of women will be in attendance at the St. Patrick's party to be held at the Moose hall, Woodstock, on March 17, beginning at 1 p.m. Any number of different games will be in play and you can make up your own table and' play together or you can find partners after your arrival at the party. If you haven't already purchased tickets they cart be bought at the door. Therfe" WfB be table prizes and a door prize. EJach auxiliary unit is contributing two angel food cakes to this affair and the'Wonder Lake donors are Mrs. Steven Duttko and Mrs. Fred Zandier. Set aside the evening of April 14 as a group of women are planning to put on a party for the benefit of the hospital building fund. The original quota was met but the auxiliary was sure the women would want to pledge an additional sum so that when the women's and children's wing went up it would be' just the best possible. Therefore each auxiliary unit throughout the county is thinking up ways to make money. Your local directors, Lillian Belshaw, Simone Fuller, Neva Fuhrer and Dorothy McEachren, thought a public card party would be just the thing. So mark the date for Thursday, April \4, at Harrison school, at 8 p.m. There will be table prizes, a door prize and good coffee and cakes. The card playing groups and the sewing groups that meet regularly here in Wonder Lake and contribute to the building fund are getting behind this and a committee is making plans, selling tickets and getting donations. The committee, besides the directors mentioned above, is made up of Melvina Knackstedt, Harriet Bell, Kay Boldt, Marie Milbrandt, Mary Ruggero and Ruth Woodward. Wonder Lake unit has a large membership and we are sure all will want to make this party a success, so please come and support it. We want husbands to come if they aren't being pressed into baby sitting service. Different table games will be played so you can make up your own foursome and play the game of your choice, or come singly and we'll see that you find partners. If possible .bring your own cards for the game you wish to play, but we will try to have extras of various kinds.. Donations of cakes and paper plates and prizes are being asked for among the membership. Here's a chance to donate the "what-is-it" that you received from Great Aunt Emma last Christmas. Remember the date-- April 14., .1 Canasta, Groups Play Mrs. Helen1 Coupe entertained the members of the Wonder Center Canasta group on March 3. High scorers were Marie Milbrandt and Neva Fuhrer. STATE BUDGET At a Springfield press conference last ' week, Gov. William G. Stratton said he will support General Assembly legislation to merge the work of the Civil Service Commission with a state personnel agency. Bills on this subject are expected to be introduced soon in the assembly. The governor reported that preparation of the state budget for 1955-57 is running about two weeks ahead of the schedule set two years ago. Gov. Stratton said he has looked at a report on alcoholism, and indicated he probably will recommend that an advisory committee on the matter be set up in the Department of Public Welfare. Electricity Can't Think - But You Can, And Should! Did you ever turn on the electric stove and have the radio slowly turn ired, while music started coming from your refrigerator? Or plug in the toaster and have the oven door light up with "I Love Lucy"? Of course not -- because electricity is dependable. If wiring and' appliances are in good, safe condition, we will get the result we expect when we snap a switch, plug in an appliance, or turn on a motor. There are danger signs to heed and precautions to take if electricity is to continue being a safe, dependable servant. A spark or flash occurring where it shouldn't is a Earning of trouble that should toe investigated immediately, as it might start a serious fire if the cause isn't remedied. The first tingle of shock that you feel when a switch is turned on or an appliance is touched is another serious warning to heefd -- because the second shock could make you feef like the roof caved in! A shock is usually an indication that a "hot" wire has become grounded or is touching the frame of the device or appliance. Further, it is a condition that will grow worse rather than improve. Appliances such as washing machines, water . heaters and stoves should be properly grounded. Portable electric tools used in garages or basements should also be grounded. Everyone knows the potential danger of frayed extension and lamp cords. Overloading circuits lowers the voltage and may cause fire if proper-sized fuses are not used. Where electricity causes injury or fire, don't blame the electricity; blame the person who forgot, overlooked or failed to heed a significant warning. Eteetricity provides many comforts jgpd conveniences. Thanks pfirtl^To its power, former luxuirieAf-^ r^i now necessities. In order to " continue enjoying these benefits, heed all warnings and observe all precautions. Let J smoke curl from the chimney of your home rather than from between your walls! By being careless, you may find electricity lighting up your eyes and ears instead of your tools and appliances -- which would be a painful and not too efficient result! Treat electricity with respect -- it is an excellent servant but a totally heartless master. Always remember that electricity can't think -- but you can! s Renew chat subscription to ttot Plalndealer now! ' DR. HENRY FREUND OPTOMETRIST At 136 S.
