At present, however, Hartland boasts many fine farms. The name of the first settler in the township seems to be uncertain, but F. Grlffen,, George Stratton and John Quinlaii seem to be the chief contenders for this honor. Alvki Judd and his brother, Jamect Were .also very early settlers. About the time Hartland was being settled, the Illinois and Michigan canal project was abandoned for want of funds. Apparently there were many' laborers' working there who had friends and relatives in Hartland. This brought many of the Irishmen working on the canal to Hartland to seek their fortunes. Before long the township became known as the Irish township. Colder, Desmond,- Haley, Wood, Collins and Blair were elected to office in the first %election toeld in 1850. Francis Short from County Tyrone, ° Ireland, fathered the first white child in the township. A Kate Donnelly, also claimed the distinction of being tile first white child in thg township. Walter Gibbs and Widow Sutton were the first ooUple to be married in Hartland. In 1840 the first saw mill was built by Wesley Diggins. It was water-powered by the Kishwaukee creek. The mill WAS located at the fork of the road. Where a store was opened. For a time it seemed as if ft village would develop here. It became known as Brookdale but failed to fulfill its promise. Hartland had mail, service in its early days and was compelled to get its mail through McClures Grove, twenty-five miles distant. Later, mail came from Crystal Lake and finally a post office was established at the home of Alvin Judd in Hartland township.
