We just avvakened to the fact that a visit to our two funeral homes had had its effect. The sudden loss of Leo, Mary Jane and Louise has stunned whole community. By all standards they were good kids. There have been many tears shed -- even by many not closely associated with those young peo$»le. But, we honestly feel that for every tear a hundred prayers have been said. And we lost Mrs. George Kramer. We served with tier on .the McHenry Library Board and will miss her more than a little bit. Now, there was a -girl wiho could roll up her sleeves and get a project moving. You know, we were still thinking a great deal about the toss of a true friend, Frank Hughes, when all those other jolts came along. Somehow, we didn't .think that Prank would ever die. But, the world moves on and newspaper presses won't wait. Time would not permit a full game for us last Sunday, but we saw a couple of innings, as Joimsburg's Tigers beat the Shamrocks in a practice game. Joe Frett has a good mixture of veterans and rookies and may tome up with a fine blend. Larry Stilling- has work abead. Of course, when Sonny Miller gets in the groove, the pitching worries will ease. We noted that Guv Bolger was in uniform. There were rumors Dying around about his contract .roubles. In fact, if Guv had held out beyond May 1, Manager Stfclmg planned to hide his suit. While we were there, Howie Katz tried to steal second base and was nailed. Guess he forgot ohat! old rifle-arm Guv was behind the plate. < We Ihear that Algonquin powdered the ball seal hard at Richmond. Next Sunday the Shamrocks travel to Algonquin while it&hmond visits Johnsburg. hoped <that the county league would' sponsor a B league. Money is the stumbling block. When boys finish competition in iiie American Legion league at age 17, tlhey are usually too young to step into county' league competition. This is 'the age where young men need sports recreation. Any ideas? DAILY PINUPS: A smart cook knows her seasoning; a clever main bows to reasoning. The things that carry no price tag are priceless possessions. It's never a riot .to be on a diet, but being a sampler just makes you .much ampler. Not every one is foolish who has not been found wise. Most men favor sound economy; many women favor "scentsible" buying. Sometimes a woman's final decision is a far cry from the one that follows it. Waiting on a woman is more pleasing to a man than waiting for her. JOHNSBURG TIGERS TROUNCE McHENRY SHAMROCKS 12-4 The season is here for fish stories. We misplaced a notation, but wiH catch up on this one. Connie Dowell, 12-year-old daughter of Earl Dowell, Huefarm's Subdivision, caught a 5% pound, 18-inch bass in Fox River right off the pier. As we afet it, a small perofo took the \Vprm and the large bass took the email perch. That pre-season game between the McHenry Shamrocks and Johnsburg Tigers took .place on the McHenry diamond last Sunday afternoon with) Johnsburg winning quite handily, 12 to 4. The game served to bring out both strength and glaring weaknesses. The Tigers collected a total of 18 hits good /for 27 basea to. show thait - 'power lurks in the lineup and on the bench. Sixteen players were used by Manager Joe Frett. Manager Larry Stilling saw enough to tell him <that his team needs plenty of practice and some additional strength.. Some of that strength will no doubt come along w(hen the colleges close shop for the summer. Howie Freund was back in the infield . after taking a whirl at outfielding last year. His two singles and triple lead the swat department. Harry Stilling, another veteran, collected two hits to lead the Shamrocks. •lohnsborg (12) Howie Freund, 3b B. Huemaim, 3b Katz, lb R. Freund. They just blew in to check over the sports department budget. We'll try to explain the expense account. If it Ipoka hopeless, we'll punt on third down. X<arry Stilling phoned to say tftait the Shamrock game at Algonquin next Sunday will start a|.l o'clock. Gene Martine, Woodstock Blue Streak pitcher, Ihurled a no-hit game against Warren this week. Gene gave up three walks, struck out 12 batters and won his game 2 / to 1. There is action in McHenry toward a Pony League. We are all for it. It Pays to Shop At Home This column, starting with this issue, will publish tips that should and will help your golf game, through the courtesy of Julius Goffo, McHenry Country Club's golf professional. The most common fault for missing golf shots, claims Goffo, is not that old excuse of, "You looked up," but during your down swing, you do not maintain the same distance between your chin and the ball, as you do when addressing the ball.-By raising the upper portion of your body, you lengthen the foresaid distance. To correct this fault, set yourself slightly forward over the ball, swing your arms free from the shoulders withoiit lifting up at the waistline. He will gladly explain and demonstrate his tips so if you are having trouble, he is the one to see. McHenry high school's golf team had another sad weekend of golf. They journeyed to Libertyvilie last Thursday and tied 5 to 5. Friday, Crystal Lake paid McHenry a visit and it was a joyride for them. They rode over our youthful lads 10 to 0. Monday of this week, our Warriors drove to Elgin and the lads from the Watch City wound up and ticked away for a 10 to 0 win. Sunday's winners at the Country Club, playing a Peoria system in the three brackets, were: Group 1 through 7, Joe Nischan first, and Carl Schmidt second; Group 8 to 13, Frank Rourke first. Warren Kuhlman second; Group 14 and up. Hank Tonyan first, H. V. Jackson second. Next Sunday it will be a Blind Bogey event in one bracket a/nd low net in all three brackets. The ladles of McHenry C.C. have scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, a best score on even holes by classes and urge all present to remain for the open meeting immediately after lunch. Can it be arranged to have the winners names and their scores to be published ? Was it true that when Ed Buss and ibis wife, Joan, landed at a Mississippi airport, rented a bright yellow CHEVY convertible to meet Frank and Bev Rourke, Dick and Emily Heater, Hal and Nor Nilles and Bill Bacon at Gulf Hills Dude Ranch and Country Olub' at Ocean Springs, Miss. ? Say it isn't so, Ed. Saturday, Earle Seepe had as his guest Bob Voigts, former football coach of the Northwestern Wildcats. Bob missed his birdie putt for an easy par. At Chapel Hill, A1 Godina had a rought time keeping track of Frank O'Leary's strokes. . Adduci won two packs of smokes from Joe Hertik with a 46. At Pistakee Golf Club, Wauconda beat Grant of Fox Lake 8 to 7. Wauconda won over Antioch 12 to 3, Ela Vernon (Lake Zurich) won over Wauconda 8% to 6%, and Grayislake won over Grant 10 to 5. Roy Weselius was in a threesome and he sure got some exercise. Larry Nimsgern and Bob Kreler, tlhe early birds, had 56 ar.d 48 respectively. This column wishes to convey to the Paul G,erasch and Barbier families our deepest conckjlencea. Our association with Leo, Mary Jane and Louise will always be remembered. Davis' words' m last week's Public Pulse. However, I wish to add to her remarks. I drive my child to and from Edgebrook school each day and it has been my observance that many of the cars and trucks racing past there are driven by some of McHenry's most respected citizens and business people. There is a speed limit sign posted in front of tfce school which says "15 miles per hour" and rightly so, since it would be difficult to avoid hitting a chiM at any other speed. That there should be no mistakes, shouldn't we have the speed limit sign larger than it now is ? Mrs. R. R. Ostergren McHenry, Ilil.
