HARDEST BUSIEST CHEAPEST WORKERS IN TOWN PLAINDEALER WANT ADS T ipson raffic Safety CHARLES F. CARPENTIER Sccrctary of Stjtc If you have children in your family, especially little ones of only three, four or five years old, be especially careful when they are riding in the car with you. It is difficult to keep children of that age quiet. Tbey like to squirm, climb, bounce on the slat--anything but sit still. They may feel you are being unnecessarily strict when you insist that they don't stand, climb or bounce around, but if you are firm about it, you may easily save them a bumped noggin at least and possibly more serious injuries. Don't let a child stand on the floor in the front section of the car, with his nose only an inch or two from the windshield. A sudden stop could cause painful injuries. Don't let him stand on the seat. Again, a sudden stop would pitch him forward into the dash or windshield, or a sudden swerve would cause him to fall to the side. Falling against the door, he could be hurt; falling against you, he could cause you to lose control of the car and get involved in a really serious accident. A copy of the completely new "Rules of the Road" booklet will be sent to you free upon request. Write to CHARLES F. CARPENTIER, Secretary «f State, Springheld, Illinois. V.F.W. Members who volunteered to attefid were Pat Haynes, Terry Becker, Elizabeth Thompson, Delia Witte, Tina Morrison and Mary Weidenian, hospital chairman. Among other business brought up at our meeting w&s the suggestion that we donate to ..the McHenry beach fund. It was agreed by all to donate $25 to this cause, which assures protection for the children of our community. I want to take, this opportunity to mention that the Garden club held a style show at the V.F.W. clubhouse on Wednesday, June 15. Alice Barbian was manager of this event and Betty Nielsen's lovely styles were shown. We hope to see a good turnout at our next meeting, wh'ch will be held on June 27 at -8 p.m. THE MINORITY How Iced Coffee Began JS We can thank the French for iced coffee. More than 125 years ago, French colonial soldiers stationed at Mazagran, Algeria, found that drinking coffee syrup mixed with cold water made the desert heat more endurable. The soldiers carried the vogue back to Paris, where it is to this day called Cafe Mazagran, with the added fillip of ice in tall, frosty glasses. $1 Americans ice their coffee fdt summertime meals, socials, or coffee breaks. Perfectionists make it double strength to avoid dilution, and piour it hot over ice, while others brew their coffee as usual, and allow it to cool before serving. Many hostesses make coffee regular strength, and use coffee ice cubes. Cream and sugar may be used with ic*d coffee as preferred. They can be pretty tricky if you don't handle them right. Too many tractor accidents happen because of carelessness. The day grows hot and drowsy, the job grows monotonous--and bingo!
