< THE McHENHY PLAINDEALER • *04 « f i ,, v,y;' Thursday, June 30, 1955 v\ J$tf £clhJ!L lUrdl^h, r* ASS- 9Hca>t"| It must be summer. Carnivals have started. A long dry spell followed a long rainy spell. City relatives have appeared. Neckties are scarce. Boats are buzzin'. Girls of questionable age are selling magazines to work their way through college. Stores are busier and costumes are dizzier. Yep. It must be summer. And how the heck can a guy get away for a vacation? Took in the ball, game at Johnsburg last Sunday and again enjoyed all the press box comforts. Saw "Brune" Butler at the game. Made it sefem like old times. Math N. Schmitt was there. He doesn't miss many games. Walter Warner missed a foul fly, but Joe Simon caught one. Walter has been out of training a few years. "Toots" Eddy, the old scorelkeeper was there. Scouts were in the crowd, but they didn't see much to write home about. But, those scouts will be back. They want to get a line on a couple of promising umpires -- Si Meyers and Hank Hiller. Those two umpired an exhibition game last week and are said to be mighty sharp. Ed Doyle was really totin' the mail Monday morning. He's never been around so early, but of course he wanted to tell us that the White Sox lost a doubleheader on Sunday. Great wealth may seem precious, but good health is priceless. Counter balance: small change. Self reliance is an alliance between competence and common sense. Feminine foibles are fabulous; masculine muddles are maddening. • Real treasure: big trout. No matter the rocks, or the weight of the load, Sweet is the journey on friendship's road. ANONYMOUS SOFTBALL NOTES By Sml Wcylarol - - Fair and clear weather enabled a full schedule to fce played last week; There were 8 games played, 4 of which were re-scheduled. The results: Pa's Yanks 13 Buss Motors 8 Old Bridge Tavern 15 Wonder Lake Businessmen 10 Pa's Yanks Bimbo's Tavern McHenry S & G Buss Motors Bimbo's Tavern < McHenry S & G JUNIOR LEGION Things have been tough all over since Sunday. Last week we boldly printed a jab at a couple of Cub fans (George Justen and Holger Pederson). Back it came this week, clipped out and neatly taped to a card. This notation was added: "Hows about joining us ? -- If you haven't already. Them Sundays are ruff". All we can say is that our ' Box should keep holy the sabath. There is no sleep as enjoyable as those minutes borrowed after tile alarm clock has blasted out its horrid tone. We urge you to attend the dedication of the Little League baseball diamond! next Wednesday^ night. You are in for a surprise. Clarence Smith and Clarence Stilling are still planning a reunion of the "Original Shamrocks" and all players who have been on the Shamrock team down through the years. We want to compile a complete list so please write or phone this department, giving your name and present address. That will be the start. Do it now. This program will take time. The Purchase Price - Is Too High The returns we get for the money we send to foreign nations to keep them from fighting on the side of the Communists may be like what little Tommy got to his dealings with an enemy. Tommy came home with a blackeye. "What have you been up to?" demanded his mother. "I've been fighting Billy Briggs," the boy confessed. "Well, tomorrow morning take him some cake and make friends," his mother told him. Tommy did so, but the following afternoon he came home with his other eye blacked. "Good heavens!" exploded his mother, "who did that?" "Billy did," said Tommy. "He Wants more cake." DAILY PINUPS There is no set time for doing what you should, no set formula for solving your solutions. The McHenry Junior Legion Baseball Team split a double header with the Union-Marengo team last Sunday at McHejnry. The local team won the -first game 9-6 and dropped the nightcap 4-1. • Gene Freund pitched a three hitter in the first game and was in command all the way except in the fourth when some rather shaky support let in six unearned runs. Herb Baker paced the hitters with two hits and three runs batted in. Ernie Useman pitched his best game of the year but lost 4-1 in the second game. Ernie allowed only one earned run as he struck out six and walked one. McHenry failed to hit in the clutch as they blew several scoring chances. McHenry takes a 6-2 record to Harvard next Sunday. News of McHenry Speedettes HERE AMDTHERE WITH GOLF By Jimmy Kupec The McHenry Speedettes tasted defeat for the first time this season when they were beaten by the Rockford Koeds, the final score was 6-3. The Koeds managed to hit two consecutive home runs to forge ahead in the fifth inning. Up to that time the gariie was close and tightly played. Experience proved too much for our Speedettes. "Fox", the pitcher for the Koeds, was at one time a well known pro b&ll player who was reinstated to the amateur ranks last year. Her knowledge and pitching ability limited our girls to 5 hits. However Gail Banasch, the Speedettes centerfielder, powdered pitch for a home run. Some beautiful stops and catches by Lorraine Page, our left fielder, held the Koeds scoring down! somewhat. j Next week the Speedettes play another "Toughie", the Lodkport girls, who have beaten our girls in every game to date. Elaine Kmet, the Speedette, catcher, will be out of action. due to two very sprained fingers i suffered in last Saturday nite's game. It will be a week to ten: days before the doctor will allow her to get behind the plaXe again. Nevertheless our girls will be ; out there trying to beat these Lockport gals. j Lockport also boasts of a great i many seasoned players, which makes it a little uough on a team like the Speedettes who have been organized just one | year. Our girls are getting a great deal of experience from : these games and possibly next week they will chalk up their! fourth win of the season, Wei all hope they do -- for no team tries harder than the McHenry Speedettes. j • Last Friday, Arch Ward of the Chicago Tribune, carried in his column, "In the Wake of the News," a news item concerning Lorraine Conway, the 17 year young golf prodigy of Julius "Da Da" Goffo of our local golf Course. Lorraine, who is a niece of Mrs. Roy Kent, has played the McHenry course in 76 from $he men's tee. Here is a yoiihg lady who labors in trying to perfect her game every day; So we* Wish her the best of luck. On the male side, 15 yr. old Matt Eichinger, another of Goffo's students, blasted out a 34 for 9 holes Tuesday nite. In this round he had six one-putt greens. Roy Aim, son of Police Chief Aim, playecP golf at the Gulf Hills Dude Ranch, Ocean Springs, Miss., with the home pro, Earl Marshbum. Mr. Marshburn has paid two visits to" McHenry in the past year and has many local friends who have vacationed in the south. Why did Hank Tonyan want to win his match so badly last Sunday? In the first round of match play for the Presidents Trophy in Class A, Hal Nillis won over J. Varese 4 up. Dick Freund won over F. Rourke after 21 holes, Ed Buss, Jr., was victorious over C. - Schmidt, Vale Adams won from Jacik Moss, Earle Seepe^ beat Torrence 3 up, Beilman beat D. Julius Goffo's tip for the week is proper balance in the back ^wing for a good follow thru. To accomplish this, a distinctive parallel hip movement before the body turn must be made to get the most of the weight into the rieht foot. In this position it will allow the shot maker to swing thru the ball with his entire weight on the left foot. t>( For the ladies match play trophy in Class A, Babe Seepe won over' H. Miller, M. Mr. and Mrs. borey, managers of the club, are very happy for Stan Pankman, the Clubs golf professional. His group golf lesson last Friday had a good turnout and the participants gained some helpful pointers. In a private feud between A1 Godina and Ivan GustafSon, as to who will become a better golfer, it is too early to make a comparison. Stan Pankman is giving Ivan verbal lessons and AI is reading Ben Hogan's book. So far it is an even match. At Pistakee golf club the winner in the men's league was Geo. Gilbrandsen followed by John Lindstrom Jr. Tied for third were Dell Vermillion and L. Dobner. Fourth was B. Gilbrandsen and fifth was Ed. Underwood.
