Thiroday. Jiin# 30. 1955' -- J ' > ' .' THE "McHENRY plaindealeh UTTLE tEAGU£ BASEBALL FELD EVENING. JULY 4, AT V.F.W. PARK One of McHenry's most successful ventures is nearing realization. The Little League base- 4ia.ll park will be dedicated next Wednesday evening, July 6, starting at 7:15. , The new park is located on the V.F.W. grounds and is complete to the last detail. A home run fence has been constructed with donors names neatly lettered. A scoreboard win keep you posted. Bleacher seats have been Byilt. Dugouts loo(k like big league arrangement. The backstop is a dandy. The field has ubeen 'built, to standard specifications and looks neat as you please. One wonders how all this came about. A few men gave many hours time in planning and working. They in turn brought out the interest of others. Some kicked in with money. Others picked up their tools and went to work. Cooperation has never been more in evidence. The regular Little League column will give you the news of the week. A few added notes: No practice next week. Tuesday night will be clean-up ^night and all fathers are urged to be present to help put the field in shape for the dedication. The regular, schedule starts next Thursday evening. New uniforms will be given out on Monday morning, July 4, at 9 o'clock at the V.F.W. grounds. Little League Little League Baseball is Big League Baseball adopted to the cental and physical capacities of ^boys 12 years of age and under. *lt is regulation baseball with several exceptions, necessary in order that the strength of the young players will not be overtaxed -- exceptions such as equipment, number of innings, size of field, distance of pitcher's plate from- home plate and distance between bases. Benefits To Community And The Boys (It would be impossible to measure accurately and completely the benefits of Little League Baseball to the individual boy, the team on which he plays, the league to which he belongs, and ithe neighborhood where 'Little f League operates. The real benefits lie in intan- 1 gibles which become evident as the program establishes itself in a community. Here in McHenry, there are several citizens who deserve a world of praise for organizing Little League baseball, for donating equipment to build a field, for donating time to work on the field and to the managers and coaches who have helped bring this program along so well. Purposely, we will not mention names, as it would be difficult to Include everyone who has helped. To all of you, who want to help and have not as yet had the chance, be at the park on dedication nite and also on opening nite. There are things yet to be 4done and we can use support from all of you. Last week we printed the schedule for the Major League teams. This week ypug(will find a schedule for M£j}Qi> League teams. Minor League games are played on Friday eyeing and Saturday afternoon. "V Next y&tfjr. Major Leaguers will be selef&fi from this years Minor Leaguers. So it is very important that all of you boys play hard and insure your chance of being selected for a Major League Team. Remember also, that some of ,you will have a chance to move up this year. Some of the older boys in the Major League are asked to be on hand for Minor League games, to help as umpires, coaches or for whatever need arises. Don't forgpt! Owl£ ..Orioles SHAMROCKS WW 14 TO It SAME ATJOHNSBURG Howard Knox Hits Grand Slam Homer To Clinch Viclory 'Twas a wild ball game at Johnsburg last Sunday as the McHenry Shamrocks blasted across 8 runs in the first inning and went on to win by a 14 to 11 score. Wally Frett started on the hill for the Tigers and was figured to stop the left-handed power in the McHenry lineup. Wally failed to survive the first inning, ibut might have fared much better if a double-play had clicked instead of all. hands being Safe. Willie Klapperich and John Toomey gave it a try before Art Jackson came in, from centerfield in the fifth to pitch masterful "ball. The Shamrocks scoring was all over when Art took charge and gave only one hit the rest of the way. A1 Bockman started for McHenry and gave up, 7 runs in his four inning stretch. Sonny Miller hurled the rest of the way, experiencing his worst trouble in the eighth when 3 hits knd 2 walks were good for 3 runs. 'mere were some long blows by both teams, but the one that proved to be the clincher was a grand slam homer by Howard Knox in the fourth inning. Toomey walked the first three batters in the inning to set up the spot for Howard's mighty blow. Beciknell followed another drive that went a country mile into center field, but Art Jackson hauled it in with his back to the diamond and running hard. A great catch in any ball park. There were other hitters of note. Tom Oeffling had 3 singles. Richard Freund hit a 3-run homer, a double and single besides drawing a base on balls. Jim Jackson walked his first time up, then added a triple and two singles. Art Jackson homered. Sahs tripled for McHenry. So did Bockman. The boys really tore up the base paths in this one.
