And this was the year of the big filibuster which spotlighted the persistent, irreconcilable Rep. John Morris of Carroll county. Morris and a few of his colleagues virtually stymied all legislative action for two weeks by demanding that all bills be read "at large" (in full) as required by the Illinois Constitution. There were other small filibusters- in both the House and the Senate. And, there were night sessions, long • before the final night, which lasted until the wee hours. There were more than the usual number of disappointments and heartaches and many good 'bills were defeated, while, at the s§ime time, some bad bills were passed. A record was sec m bills introduced (more than 2,200), but it is encouraging to know that a record was also set in" bills defeated. In the midst of the^ busy session the State Senate lost one of its best loved and most respected members in the passing of the late Senator Frank P. Johnson of Kewanee. .
