He was struck by one or more cars in a three-auto accident on Rt. 12, east of Barrington. Death was attributed to a skull fracture. Whitmore had just alighted from a car and was crossing the highway when he was struck by a car driven by Lester Sagester of the McHenry area, who swerved but was unable to avoid hitting him. In doing so, the Sagester auto collided with two others and police officers who investigated were unable to determine whether Chaucer also may have been hit by one or both of the ; other cars.
