With the temperature condition is aired. The next bloke who mentions the good old summer time to us had better sing it softly. Sunday was real nice. We sat right out 'neath the blue skies and watched (Fox Lake beat the Shamrocks 1 to 0. We didn't like the results, but one can't have everything. Saw Joe Prett and his McHenry County All-Stars put up a great battle before losing in the seTm-finals of the state tournament at Elgin last Friday night. The league poweitfc must have learned that more careful selection of players will have to be made in the future. The players chosen were fine, but they were chosen without thought of filling pbsitions. Players should not play out of their regular positions in state tournaments. With only two regular outfielders, Joe had to use a good catcher in one garden spot. Another thing, you need more pitching strength for a short series. The crowd liked the spirit on the team. They never gave up. Jess Armstrong has another McHenry County team in the tournament. Rain came at the right time for th^m last weekend so they will be in action again Friday night. We are making our annual search for a 2-piecte, skirt covered bathing suit. Better give up. They must have gone out with the hand-wound graphaphones. This area sent a large delegation in to see Billy Klaus perform for the Boston Red Sox last weekend. And Billy didn't help our White Sox cause one bit. These Cub fans are really a kindly lot. They come at us from all sides the morning after a Sox loss. To offer sympathy, of course. The Speedette? are back on the sport page this week. They want you to watch them Saturday night. That's enough. It's too hot. See you next week. DAILY PINUPS: When a friend is placed in a category he becomes an acquaintance. Ups and downs keep you balanced, it's the jerks that get you down. Memories are like daisies in December and mistletoe in May. You may dig the earth, you may sow the seed, but sure as it flowers you'll find a weed. A jigger of song and a dash of adventure mixed into a glass of water could be a mental cocktail. Gratitude is the art of receiving gracefully, of giving graciously. Anonymous Northern lllini Bowmen News The Northern mini Bowmen held their Invitational Shoot on July 24, with 110 participating in the event. Luncheon and dinner will be served and the tee time is Set for 10 o'clock. If you have .a handicap of 18 or less and carry a C.D.G.A. card and care to participate, contact Julius Goffo, McHenry C.C. golf pro. Some of the pros who will travel to McHenry are Harry Pezzullo, Illinois P.G.A. president, Lou Espisito, Byron Harcky, Bill Rhodes. Art Demane, Paul Markman and Earl Marshburn, home pro at Gulf Hills, Ocean Springs. Miss., who, with his wife, will be guests of Frank and Beverly Rourke of McCullom Lake. Sunday at McHenry C.C. Ed Buss, Jr., won his match from Ralph Bennett 5 and 4 in the first round of match play for the club championship. Other winners were T. O'Connell over J. Busscher, G. Kinsala over E. Seepe, J. Varese over E^ Simon, G. Johnson over F. Rourke, Vale Adams over H. Nillis, N. Knaack over C. Schmidt and J. Moss over T. Lundmark. Blind Bogey winners in the 1-9 handicap bracket found T. Lundmark the winner and C. Schmidt second, the 10-15 class was taken by Fred Rogers, while W. Kadisak and B. Beilman tied for second, the 16 and over class was halved by C. Reed and E. Gac. Low net winners in all brackets were T. O'Connell with a 69-4-65, and Kinsala, Wheelock and Gac tied for second with 69's. The McHenry ladies held a mother and daughter tournament Tuesday and twenty teams entered. All the daughters who entered received a golf ball as a prize. The event was a twoball foursome with selective drives and alternate shots, with a Peoria system involved. La- Verne Hanley borrowed Helen Miller's daughter, Pat, and the two proved to be the winning team with a 32. Julia Kralowetz and daughter, Karen, were second with a 33. Verona Kent and niece, Laurayne Conway, had a 34 for third. The Tuesday niters played their once a month twilite golf and a couple of fellows paid no heed to the hot weather. Harry Conway came up to your reporter and said he missed a short two-foot putt for a 34 and finished with a 35 and along comes Mike (What a Grouch) Michels with a very, very snappy 30. Mike had birdies on the first, second, third and fourth holes, paired the par 5 fifth, got his par 4 on the sixth, birdied the seventh and parred the eighth and ninth. Par for the front nine is 444-454-433--35. Nice round of golf in any league. At Chapel Hill the handicap event was won by E. R. Ohlsen with an 80-18-62. Jim Adduci came in second with a 94-24-70. The low gross was taken by Ray Holm with an 82 and right behind him with an 87 was Larry Corey, the manager's son. Keep it up, Larry, and you'll be champ" someday. At Pistakee in the men's league Roy Wesilius came in first with 41-11-30. Second was John Linstrom, Sr., who had a 32-1-31. There was a three way tie for third, Bob Newberg 44-11-33, Leo Smith 39-6-33, and Bob Dickson 40-7-33; fourth was Barrett with 46-12-34. The ladies league winners were: First, Ruth Barlow; second, Izzy Williams; third, a tie between Flo Thelen and Ruth Icenogle; fourth, Audrey Kannentberg; and fifth, Mary Beyer. They had a good turnout for the two-ball foursome event Sunday. The trophy was taken by Mr. Stancliff and Mrs. Greenwald with a 42. Leo Smith and his partner, T. Stillwaugh, came in with a 43 for second place. Third was Mr. Elbert and R. Barlowe, with a 44. Say, Leo, looks like you have found the secret of golf. Your name appears quite regularly in this column. "Whitey" Wanahala was a- hot pitcher, blazing in a fast ball with too , much control to give the home team a chance to make him woilk as they have in the past by waiting. "Whitey" allowed only three scattered hits and walked only one while striking out six batters. "Sonny" Miller pitched the kind of game that will get you in the win column more often than not, but you can't win without runs. . • * Some pretty fancy defensive play was in evidence most of th ' way as players hustled throug to play the game in less than two hours. The lone score of the game came in the second inning after two were out. Stanton, a nifty looking catcher, singled to center and moved-up fast to second on a low pitch that bounced out of Jack Molidor's mitt not too far in front of the plate. Wanahala then uncorked a double to center to win his own ball game. A1 Bockman led off the second with a hit to left center. The Shamrocks chose to pass up the sacrifice and Harry Stilling tapped the first pitch to the mound for a double play. With one out iifthe sixth, John Bolger drew the only walk issued by Wanahala.* John broke for second and might have been nailed. As it h^gpened, Stanton threw to first Summerville threw the balft, inM^eft field. A stolen base ^L|id th©*,error put John on third.'ISahs todk a third strike and Gerry Molidor grounded out to Haviland. The Shamrocks sent six batters to the plate in the seventh, but nobody scored. Let's forget that deal. A couple of neat plays to remember: Miller's pick-off of Haviland at second base in the seventh to end the inning. It was well-timed. In the eighth, Gerry Molidor's smash bounced off Wanahala's glove. Bob Klaus crossed over from third to make a one-hand pick-up and throw to first for the out. Becknell's hard liner in the third went smack into Kennedy's hfcnds at slj/brt. And Haviland got a nice hand for a back-hand stop of John Bolger's grounder in the eighth. It was a good ball game -- a tough one to lose. The umpiring was handled by a couple of veterans, Jim DeSantQ and John Andricike, without a hitch or complaint. TIGERS RAP OUT 13 SAFE BLOWS IN 6-4 WIN OVER RICHMOND Little League legion baseball The Johnsburg Tigers rattled 13 hits off their bats in a 6-4 win at Richmond last Sunday. Art Jackson allowed only seven hits, but found quite a few base runners gaining life on errors. Howie Katz moved across the diamond to play third while Si Meyers handled first base. Howie cracked out 4 hits, including the only extra base blow of the game -- a two-bagger. Johnsburg (6) AB R H H. Freund, ss 5 3 2 H. Katz, 3b 5 0 4 L. Freund, 2b '5 12 R. The Falcons and Cards had a real battle that went to the Falcons. Y to 6. Another high scoring gape ended in a. 12-12 tie between the Cauls and Orioles. The Bluebirds had plenty to spare in a 16 to 1 game, with the Eagles. It was 8 for the Orioles and 4 for the Owls. Then came a tight game in which Vaupell hit a home run to help his Owl mates edge the Falcons 4 to 2'. MINORS Some good prospects are looming up in the Minor League group. Some of the boys should be right up there next year. The Cards won, a 6-1 game from the Owls. Willie Winkel was plenty sharp in pitching a no-hitter as the Eagles beat the Falcons 5 to 2. Willie's fine play has marked him to move up to the Majors. The Orioles outlasted the Bluebirds 18 to 16. Another of the League's finest, Allan Bauer, pitched a no-hit game for the Cardinals in beating the Owls. Congratulations, boys, you are going great guns. This game will be played at a later date. A mix-up in the schedule caused Wonder Lake and Lakemoor to sit the last game out. For the first game of the season, St. Pat's were the home team at McCullom Lake because no arrangement was made for the V.F.W. field, so the game that was played should have been McCullom Lake as home team.
