' l. • K! w" • • } r K*\ : '•' -.l.'V^ IMWIjjlfpii THE i^cHEIfHY'PLJtt|«)EALKir Mi Ag- Btecigl There has been a tenable turn of events in the ranks of our Plaindealer force. We cpuldn't believe our ears when we walked in Monday morning and were greeted by that avowed So* hater, Lonnie Rookdby, with -- "Boy, we sure are in there now!' We thought our natural enemy was referring to- his Cubs and passed it off on the terrible heat. But, no. He has kept it up all week. "We," says he, when talking about enthusiastic Soj^ fans. Our spokesmen have made it plenty clear that we want no part of those turncoats who try to climb the fence where the grass lootos greener. But, Rooksby, The Rooker, is trying to wedge his way into the ranks of Sox fans. He loves us now. It is mighty hard to keep this gang in line. After all we said about men's fashions, in comes Jack Buckie on Wednesday morn-, ing with a pair of trousers you couldn't wear to a bull fight. Tfoey are that color. Where the head, the heart and the hand work in harmony, wholesome results are achieved). A kiss without an encore is like a cake without frosting. Anonymous WITH By Jimmy Kopec HAMM'S CHAMPS BOWL HERE TfciuwiSy.Augultf 25, Twas about 100 in the shade and luckily we had shade under Pete Freund's trees at Johnsburg last Sunday afternoon as we watched what was billed as a battle between the McHenry Shamrocks and Johnsburg Tigers. J McHenry won the game 11 to 1 without any semblance of a battle. There was no resemblance between this game and some of the old time Rattles between the two teams. You can bet that those Tigers will not be as tame next Sunday when they meet Fox Lake in the start of the championship play-offs. By special arrangement? Fox Lake will play all games of the a*Out-of-3 at Johnsburg. • The Crystal Lake Merchants defeated Algonquin to gain fourth glace and will come to McHenry next Sunday for the first playoff game. a With Roewer on the mound, those scrappy Merchants can be, hjttird to beat. The big fellow can pgnr 'em in. JJoe Suttoh, Frank Blake, Will Bjtake, Joe Adams and Nick Adams were among the shade t#ee customers at Johnsburg last Sunday. The sun kept driving us back until Joe Adams was just a-step away from Mrs. Freund's kitchen along aibout supper time. Larry Stilling may have his team pepped up to a point where tfiiey can go places in this fight for the championship. They really. hustled laist Sunday. ^|Bome of the various summer sports are fading out so why not turn out to give the county lengue boys a bit of encouragement. The best is yet to come in that league. At McHenry Country Club last Sunday in the handicap bracket of 1-7, Ralph Bennett won the first place certificate award with a 66. Tied for second place awards were John Varese and Tom O'Connell with 69's. In the 8-13 bracket, Corky Mairhofer received the laurel, followed by Emil Simon. The 13 and upward bracket was taken by Ray Hughes with a 69. Ray Page, C. H. Duker, Ray Johnson and Ray Rode split second prize. The blind bogey event was divided by Ray Johnson and T. O'Connell. Carl Schmidt won the Chicago District Golf association trophy from semi-finalist Nlckie Freund. Nick reminds me of that sayiiig "always a bridesmaid, never a bride." He has always been near the top but has never made the grade. Now that he has become a father again, let's hope, his luck has changed for the forthcoming year. The McHenry Ladies Golf association travelled to Woodstock Country Club for a diay of golf activities and a good time was had by all. Mrs. "Babe" Seepe tooto top honors with a 51 in the low gross class. At the mention of the "Babe's" name,, does My one know her first name? If so, please pass it on to this reporter. The winners of the low net guests were Dorothy Beckenbaugh, Kathleen Neary, Grace Glorney and Berniece Jensen, all tied for the first prize. Julia Kralowetz won the honors in the low putts class. These girls, Emily Hester, ^LaVerne Hanley, Mildred Hinspater and Beverly Rourke, exercised their abilities but found the "boo-verages" to their liking. What happened to that long ball hitter "Scooter"? Jimmie Hans won the junior class championship on the first extra hole sudden dleath playoff with a birdie three. Jim, along with Ronnie Howard and Robert Jessup, was involved iji a threeway tie after regulation play. Others who played were Gail Van Roalte, Pat Jensen and Steve Kleinhans. All were awarded trophies, but Jimmie's was the big one. At Chapel Hill, the low net winner was T. Holm with 83-14- 69, followed by F. Falbo with 89-19-70. Low gross was captured by "Moe" Domoto with a 77 and Andy Anderson second with an 85. At Pistakee golf course Bob Gulbrandson had a 75, D. Vermillion had an 80, as did Roy Clements. This is the famous Hamm's Beer Bowling squad of Chicago which will appear in a special exhibition at McHenry Recreation Saturday, Aug. 27. 1954 ABC team and five-man all-events champions*' 1954 Chicago city team Champions, and 1954 and 1955 champions of the famous Chicago Classic League, the lineup, left to right: Chuck Wagnef Joe Wilman, Harry Ledene, Joe Norris, Capt. Art Butler, Lloyd Berhoff and Carmen Salvino. The group of local bowlers who will offer competition to the Hamm's team are the same fellows who won 18 and lost only 4 matches last season while averaging 901 pins per game: Vern Freund, Earl Koch, Charlie Corso, "Torchy" Krause and Ed Pelsert. •Those who say you can't take it with you have never seen a car packed for a vacation trip." "Are you a man or mouse ? Come on, squeak up." --The Pioneer DAILY PINUPS: :The path to security is not paved with successes or ruined by sacrifices. A philanthropist is one who is willing to give but unwilling to ° be taken. Shaping your life to suit everyone could whittle you down to sawdust. When a man sticks to his guns ifs either peace or fireworks. SHAMROCKS WIN SECOND PLACE IN STANDINGS Bookman's Home Run And Pitching Beats Johnsburg 11 To 1 The McHenry Shamrocks toured up to Johnsburg last Sunday and walloped the Tigers 11 to 1, the game being played to decide second and third place standings after a tie* at the end of the regular schedule. A1 Bockman was outstanding as he scattered 6 hits in keeping the situation under control. Besides pitching fine ball, A1 batted in the cleanup spot and connected for a home run and 3 singles. His 3-run homer in the third was sufficient for victory as things turned out, but nobody anticipated the one-sided score. Howard Knox followed in the hitting department with a triple and 3 singles. Howard also made the catch of the day as he raced into left center to haul in Art Jadcson's long drive in the eighth inning. * Johnsburg scored a run in the first inning when Katz walked, advanced on a passed ball and tore home on Richard Frejand's hard hit to left. ' After the Shamrocks put across 3 more runs on 4 hits and an egror in the fourth, Art Jackson shifted from the mound to left field $nd Loren Freund took over the pitching. A total of 16 hits and 5 bases On balls gave the Shamrocks a lot of leg work on the base paths. They may have given away 3 runs on base running, but had plenty of help from the Tiger defense, especially after Manager Joe Frett sent in several reserves in the fifth inning. John Bolger played his best game of the year, collecting 3 hits and a walk in 5 trips, stealing 2 bases, starting a double play and scoring 3 funs on heads-up base running. Si Meyer, lb 2 0 0 W. Better keep* your' shootin' irons well oiled. The Illinois Department of Conservation has informed us that there is an abundance of game this year. Leonard Johnson seems to be having a streak of good luck. During the past few days he has caught six northern pike in Boone Creek. These fish range in length from 22 to *29 inches. It seems that every .time Leonard catches a pike it is bigger than the last one. Just goes to show that you. do not have to leave Illinois to catch the big ones. Well, now that we've covered the hunting seasons, we have a request. If any of our readers has ever had any odd or comical hunting, trapping or fishing experiences, please write them on a sheet rff paper and send them to this column in care of The Plaindealer.
