JUNIOR LEGION The Junior Legion baseball team, sponsored by McHenry Post 491, recently completed one of its most successful seasons in recent years with a 10 won and 4 lost record. The local team scored 107 runs to 48 for their opponents. The final batting averages show that Charlie^ Olson led the regulars with a mark of/ .385. Chick gales with .370 and Gene Freund with .350 were close behind. Tom Oeffling led all the hitters with a .500 mark but played in only two games as he is a member of the Johnsburg Tigers. Two of the early season leaders, Matt Eichinger and Wally Schimke, had to give up baseball as they had jobs that interfered. Carl Walker, used mostly in a pinch hitting role, compiled a neat mark of .375. Gene Freund led the team in times at bat, runs, hits, three base hits and tied Chick Sales for the leadership in runs batted in. Chuck Pierce led the team in two base hits, while Chick Sales and Wally Schimke led in homers. In the pitching department, Gene Freund won 5 and lost 3, Ernie Useman won 3 and lost 1 and Chick Sales won his only start. All three of Gene's losses were by one run with two of them being by scores of 1-0. Twenty-four boys played In the games at one time or another. Several of the boys had summer employment that caused them to miss some of the games. The prospects are bright for a good season next year, as only Chick Sales and Chuck Pierce, among the regulars, will be ineligible because of age.
