Fred Lancaster, executive director of the county association, states that cases in the county are on the increase, with nine new cases having been reported since April 1 of this year. Only twelve were reported during the 1954 fiscal year which ended. on March 31, 1955. In a recent tuberculin testing program sponsored by the McHenry County Tuberculosis association, one high school age girl was found to have active tuberculosis. As a direct result of this finding, her entire family and all of her close friends were examined and ttwo more cases were found, her mother and father. This made a total of three members of a four-member family that had developed active tuberciflosis. All three cases are undergoing treatment at this time, along with fourteen other residents of McHenry county. This treatment is sponsored by the McHenry county board of supervisors at a cost of about $4,000 per month, since the average person cannot stand the financial burden of arresting the disease. The estimated cost of arresting one case of tuberculosis is $15,000. This estimate is figured from the economic loAs to the community, the cost of treatment and the salary loss of the individual. EXPENDITURES ON SCHOOL HOUSING TOPS IN PAST YEAH Illinois has made unprecedented expenditures in building schools duping the past few years. It is estimated that the expenditures of building for the school year beginning July l, 1954, and ending June 30, 1955, exceeded any previous year. Many school districts are in better positions to care for their pupils^ classroom needs than ever before. However, there are some districts this year, where a part of the classes in the lower grades will be on half-day sessions or double shifts. Others that had planned building programs and thought would meet their needs for years to come are finding that due to the increased birth rate and the shifts in population, they are still in need of more buildings. This is particularly true in suburban and industrial areas. The situation has been further aggravated in some instances by poorly planned or ill advised housing development programs. Most of the alert districts have continuing committees to study the school building needs so that when the children enter school and as they pass through the elementary and high school the buildings will be satisfactory for a modern school program. WALWORTH COUNTY FAIR IN PROGRESS STARTING SEPT. 2 The 1955 Walworth county fair at Elkhorn will offer one of its most outstanding .baby beef and fat wether lamb sales when the best 4-H stock goes on the auction block at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, Sept. 2. The auction will be held in the stock pavilion. The" 4-H calf show, with 390 entrants, will dominate the livestock exhibit. The calves will overflow the new 30x200 foot calf barn and will be housed in a 60x150 foot tent. There are 65 lambs and 150 poultry entries in addition to 175 pigs, the largest number in history. Judging by the high class of harness horses entered in the $15,100, racing program at Elkhorn, the only county fair in the state with the photo finish will have need of the precision instrument. Lee Shaw, Superintendent of Speed at Elkhorn track for the past four years, considers the entry list for 1955 the best since he has been in charge.
