Last week Friday, John Hogan, Jr., with the members of the B.R. Gophers baseball team, took first place in the county, first place in the district and j second place in the state at j Champaign. Mr. and Mrs. Don James of Pardeeville, Wis., spent Thursday evening with Mr. and Mrs, Wm. Cruickshank. THE FLYING DUTCHMAN "The Flying Dutchman" is a name given by sailors to a phantom ship said to cruise in storms off'the Cape of Good Hope. According to legend a Dutch sea captain, bound homewand from the East Indies, met with heavy headwinds and storms as he attempted' to round the Cape. Begged by his men to turn back he stjibbornly refused to do so, swearing an oath that he would "beat round the Cape if he had to begf-t there till the Day of Judgment." He was taken at his word and doomed to forever beat against foul* winds in storms |o£f the Cape. , -1 NEW APPOINTMENTS Gov. William G. Stratton has appointed Henry Longmeyer, of Greenfield and Glen Brown of Viola as new members of the advisory board of livestock commissioners. The 69th General Assembly increased this board from 13 to 15 members. The governor also made two appointments to the State Soil Conservation district advisory board, which was increased from five to seven members by the General Assembly. The appointments are John Butterfield of Pana and Herman G. Heberer, of Belleville. Personals Mrs. Emily Beatty and Mrs Viola LoW spent Tuesday in the Irving Herbert home at Burlington.
