And it must be those Johnsburg Tigers are blessed. 0 As the 1955 season opened, it §eemed to most observers that It just wasn't the Tigers' year. They had to re-build. Veterans were getting too old and wheel' chairs were not allowed, under the $ules of the game. So -- the Johnsburg teHk wins the county championship. KIWANIS SPONSORS JUNIOR BOWLING STARTING SATURDAY It was a combination of people ^ttnd developments that brought Victory. In Joe Frett, the team had an experienced manager who doesn't miss a thing in a ball game. The rookies showed vast improvement as the season progressed. The old veterans ? Brother, these fellows played with the sureness of experience and th fire of youth. The Tigers had spirit and winning ways on their side. It seems to be habit forming. We couldn't arrange to see the MCHS football Warriors at Libertyville last Friday afternoon, but hear the boys Staged a real comeback in the last half to end the game in a tie. Some tell us the Warriors looked not so good in the first half. Others tell us that Lifoertyville had a big team with plenty of reserve strength and size. All agree that our boys showed real fight and spirit as "Comeback Kids" in the last period. The Woodstock High team will be here Friday night. The Streaks failed to click last week, but are said to have speed in the backfield that could *rprove troublesome if -"shook" loci&e. Oldi Timers tell us the rivalry between McHenry and Woodslock dates back to the time they took the Court House away -from us,----v- We may never get that Court House back, but a few athletic victories help us forget * the losses suffered by our forefathers. There was talk of an old timers' game, but If time is running out. A week from next Sunday you £ will see an All-Star team, picked from the county league, play the Tigers at Johnsburg. Game time f* 1:30 p.m. WITH By Jimmy Kopec The purpose of the All-Star game is to raise funds to help players who suffered injuries during the season. Sometimes an injury hits the player's pocketbook quite hard. Those players are out there giving us entertainment. They play for the sport of it. No pay. So, if you can buy a ticket or two in the advance sales, just mark it down as a good investment. We have to keep sports programs moving. This week winds up your golf column - for the season. Thanks to .Jim Kupec, we have been able to give you the coverage so long wanted. We add a thanks to Mrs. Kupec for getting the copy in to lis each week. This reporter hopes that, during'the past golfing seffSdft the reading of this colume has been of enjoyment to you. Without the cooperation of the games committees and the pro, Julius Goffo, from McHerny Country club, Mr. and Mrs. Stan Corey of Chapel Hill ^olf course, Bill Malipede of Pistakee golf club, and Earl Walsh, the head of the sports page, it would have been a tough haul. To these kind and gracious people, I thank you. if the good Lord is willing, see you next year. Thanks. The winners of the low net event for all brackets at McHenry Country club Sunday resulted in a four way tie with Vale Adams, Earl Seepe, John Buscher and Tom O'Conner. The blind bogey winner was Cart Schmidt. The ladies golf day was a bit damp Tuesday morning so there was no activity. Sunday will be the members mixed two ball foursome at McHenry. The winners of the season's events will receive their trophies and take their bows. A buffet supper will be served and dancing will follow. Well, the leaves are turning and the night air is cold. The smell of fall is in the air with duck season only 16 days away. The sports shops and hardware stores are putting up their fall displays of hunting equipment. Some have already built their blinds and are painting their blocks. The Department of Conservation tells us that they-have banded many ducks and geese in Canada. They would appreciate it if every tagged bird shot is reported to the Department. The Conservation Department also reports that duck and goose shooting will be pretty good this year. Several of the sports magazines have fine articles on hunting this month. A person can pick up a few valuable tips from \ \ ,.s\ , There have been nearly "a dozen hunting accidents this year and the Department of Conservation would like hunters to follow the ten commandments of safety more closely. They would also like the sportsmen clubs to spend more time teaching youngsters to handle guns properly. We are told to disregard all data on the back of our hunting licenses. Hunters should get a copy of the new Game Code Digest at their city clerk's office or at sporting goods stores right away. Do not take chances on following what is printed on the back of your license as courts of law will not recognize these regulations. IF.F.A. [NEWS The McHenry F.F.A. chapter held a meeting Sept. 27 to determine ' the" heads of committees for the following year. The chapter members will go to Belvidere today, Sept. 29, for an all-day outing at the Farm Program show. From the group, five boys will represent McHenry in the soil judging contest. John Hogan, reporter TENNIS LeRoy Thomas and Patsy Mc- Cracken walked off with -the McHenry Doubles Championship sponsored by the Foresters over the weekend to add to their Junior Singles titles. Thomas and McCracken had a tough time beating their finals opponents in a double elimination match, 12- 10, 12-10. The second place winners were Bob Cormier and Nancy Justen. Third place went to two younger boys who gave them both quite a battle, Dale Johnson and Mack Vycital. LEAVES ACCIDENT SCENE'A Thomas Ketchum was arrested when he left his car on tH& sfj$& of the road after it struck a cement post on the Pistakee Bajl road Saturday night. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and was released on bond of $500 and thg cast continued unitil Oct. 1. Those hustling Johnsburg Tigers are champions again. It was at Crystal Lake last Sunday afternoon that the Tigers tucked away the county .championship in a 10 t6 4 ball game. This contest was billed as the second of a three game series, but the end came suddenly. Before this Merchants picked up a bat, the Johnsburg boys had six run9 written into the records. Roewer's wildness got him into a lot of trouble as twelve batters faced him in the first inning. Three hit safely, four drpjiif walks and two were safe on errors by Dulaney at third and philpot in right. , ^ Klapperich allowed only" one hit, a single by Radovich, in the first six innings. The seventh found the Merchants coming to life with two runs as Dulaney singled, Wahlin tripled and Philpot singled. After Roewer walked Tom Oeffling and wJId-pitched him to second as a start in the fifth, Norm Britz (a shortstop playing first base) came in to pitch. Norm did a right creditable job the rest of the way, but his support was none too steady. Britz- fumbled Oeffling's surprise bunt in the seventh to pave the way for a run. Oeffling scored' another run in the eighth when his hit bounced over the right fielder's head for a triple. The throw-in 'got past Dulaney at third so Tom legged it across the plate. The Tigers sent two more runs home in the ninth that made things^ a bit more comfortable when the Merchants got off to a rally in their last chance. Dulaney and Wahlin started it off again with singles and Mc- Cannon walked. Britz singled sharply to left to score two runs. Crystal Lake's cheering section whooped It up, tout Rooney grounded' to Howie Freund and a fast double play ended it all. Aside from a couple of cases of confusion on pop-ups, the Tigers played fine defensive ball to flack up another good hurling job by Klapperich. One of the great" plays of the game was Howie iTreund's robbery on Wahlin's "sure hit" over second base.. His throw to first was in the dirt, 'but Si Meyers scooped it up for the put-out.
