Christmas trees planted five to seven years ago as part of reforestation. projects now ar« ready for thinning and the first phase of profit-taking by the land-owner, it was pointed out the Illinois Department of Conservation. Director Gle» D. Palmer said that the crop rtot only includes Illinois-grown Christmas trees, but also, greens for the holiday decoration and "a lot of satisfaction for the farmer, who is u&ing land unfit for any other purpose. The farmer is getting ah early cash return from his forest; he's protecting his watershed from erosion, and later on will obtain a steady income from poles and sawlogs" Harvest for the wholesale market begins soon after corn picking when other work generally is slack. Retail cutting and selling at the farm continue until Christmas. E. E. Nuuttila, state forester, said that, unlike other farm products, there is no surplus of good, fresh home-grown Christmas t&es and greens. In fact, about t>iro million dollars worth of trees are shipped into Dlinois e&ch holiday season. Christmas trees and greens being harvested now were planted from five to seven years ago. Ejyergreen .seedlings for reforestation can be purchased from ttte Department of Conservation ixi Springfield. Prices range from ^ to 1>4 cents per seedling. At least 500 seedlings mtist be ordered. "Director Palmer urges land owners to contact the department's Division of Forestry in Springfield for detailed information about reforestation for tree plantations, soil and water conservation and wildlife habitat. Information and application fonms also are available from district foresters located about the state and from most county agricultural offices. "Reforestation plantations are needed on approximately two million acres of Illinois land unsuited for other crops," Director Palmer observed. "To allow that land to remain idle is like paying for a dead horse." CAN HE PLAY BRIDGE? That would seem to be the logical, if unusual, question for a big-league baseball scout to ask a young sandlot whiz before signing him Up and handing him a fat bonus. For if he 'answers yes, it's a clue that he may turn out to be another Ted Williams, Ralph Kiner <*r Duke Snider. The interesting clue lies in a re* cent survey of the card playing in- . terests and habits of major league baseball players. Gift Rummy is the most frequentlyplayed card game among bait players (which is not too suiprising since it's a favorite with many people who have to travel). The survey also revealed that 30% of the players enjoy Contract Bridge and a high percentage of these are outstanding stars. Obviously ballplayers are not "all brawn" since Contract Bridge Is regarded as probably the "brainiest" of card games. As most of these players have enjoyed the game since their high school and college days, there appears to be a close affinity between a player's prowess on the basfeball diamond and his skill at bidding diamonds. Runner-up to Gin Rummy in popularity among the players was Hearts, followed by Poker "and Pinochle. Canasta, top favorite In all national polls, came in only fifth in popularity among the ball players. Sixty percent of the major league stars who participated in the siiiVey declared that they played cards frequently , while the remainder play occasionally. Among married ball players, 44% play cards frequently with their families and an additional 50% engage in an occasional family game indicating that the players and their wives find cards a wholesome family activity. Several of the major league clubs indicated clear-cut preference* for specific games. The most popular game among the Milwaukee Braves, for example, is Cribbage which has its greatest following in New England, former home of the National League team. Contract Bridge has a greater popularity among players on eastern clubs than it does with the midwestern players, who would rather play Pinochle. The four-handed Italian games of Bescala and PHshcal are popular with members bf the Brooklyn Dodgers, along with Pitch, Casino and Crazy Eights. Fan Tan is played often by the Washington Senators, but has little appeal for any other club in either league. Despite these wide differences in tastes, it appears that ballplayers, like ordinary citizens,. have found that the pasteboards provide one bf the best ways to relax during the long train and plane trips they have to make.
