X^V-'-- THE McHEfcHY f £XltoE&i£R '•. .•'V/ Thursday, December 8. 1955 By Marie Schaettgen New Members At the November meeting, we welcomed many members who have just joined our auxiliary. We are happy to have them all with us and hope they will find the auxiliary a satisfying experience. Our membershiD now stands at 219. This includes the junior members. . Two books were chosen for the McHenry library, as is our annual custom. One is "Burl Ives Tales of America," the other is 'Herman Wouk." These are presented to the library, one as a memorial each year for one, of our deceased veterans, the other to honor , the outgoing auxiliary president of our unit. Christine Krinn, chairman for the Elgin hospital veterans,! asks members to bring to the next meeting glasses of jelly for these vets. The December meeting will be our Christmas party and a grab bag of one dollar items, is planned. Our fruit cake sales have exceeded our expectations, but this is not surprising since Mrs. Kantorski has produced such excellent cakes. Thanks go to the committee who helped cut up the fruit and to Claire Olson, who has worked hard selling the cakes. There will be a limited quantity available soon which will be sold mostly through advance orders. The proceeds from this sale will go to buy outjunior members a phonograph. Any surplus will be used by them for other projects. They make tray favors for our hospitalized veterans and help in other ways whenever they can. We hope the delinquent - members will send in their dues before the. end of the m'onth. Membership in the auxiliary is a privilege which cannot be enjoyed by all who desire it, and we should be proud to be a part of this great patriotic organization. Christine Krinn and our president, Marge Mikota, attended the eleventh district convention at Downers Grove in October. Christine gave us an interesting and detailed report on this convention and its highlights. Many of the high officers of both the Legion and auxiliary addressed the meeting. Among these were our own Bill Green, who is eleventh district commander this year. JWe all wish Bill a successful year. The programs for the eleventh district's coming year were outlined too and. the slogan for the' year is "Teach, reach and preach American Ideals." The subject for this ^year's essay is "My Privilege And Obligations as an American "Citizen." More details will be given later. It. was announced that Illinois was chosen "Department of the Year" for its activities in national security programs. It was urged that "all save coupons, especially those from packages of Perk, Peak and Vet, which have a value toward helping to buy seeing eye dogs for blind veterans. Volunteers were asked to help Frances Matchen, who is in charge of the culinary department^ this ytfar. The Legion is embarking on a program of serving sandwiches on Wednesday and some /other nights. Plans, to serve a fish fry dinner on Friday evenings are in the offing. The profits from these dinners will be added to the fund used for the many helpful programs. of the Legion and the auxiliary. OVER-THE-COUNTER SALE OF LICENSE PLATES HAS. BEGUN Over-the-counter sale of 1956 motor vehicle license plates began Thursday in both the Chicago and Springfield offices,. Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier announced. Mailing of license plates applied for during the, reassignment period .and through the month of November was started on the same day, Mr. Carpentier said. At both places, applicants will be given assistance in completing application blanks and will receive receipts for their fees which may be used' as a substitute for the registration card until the Automobile department has had time to prepare the cards and mail them, Secretary Carpentier said. During the 1955 licensing period', more than 1,400,000 sets of plates were sold at the two locations, Mr. Carpentier said. EXPERT RUG CLEANING in time for the Holidays Phone 927 For .
