-- McHenry Recreation ' "i"-~ "'17'm " *"*'> - *jv 1 ">ti •"r + • Thursday, December 8. 1955 t."Aa- BlUiaHJ'i A few real good bowling scores j have been called to our attention this week. Father Miller, bowling With the 7 o'clock Foresters, rriust ! have given - those pins a special blessing as he came up with a , 644 series that featured a 247 game. Andy McCarroll went over 200 In every game for a 624 series. (Just an all-around man. Did you ; ever see him cut a rug on the danqe floor?) There are a lot of good scores in the Winder Lake Business Men's group each week, but this ; 261 for J. Flynn rates special mention. Whoa! Here's another. Dan Weber rolled a 243-653 with the 7 o'clock Foresters. "There were probably just as many reckless drivers 50 years ago, but they were driving somej thing that had more sense than I they had." The Little Warriors won their •> game, but the big Warriors were handed their first loss of the season • at Warren last Friday night. r McHenry Junior Hunter Safety Club Too many fouls may be the story of the loss. Warren's Beshel sank 17 free throws. That did it But, that is all past history. ; The coming weekend will be a real test for the 'McHenry team. On Friday night they travel to Libertyville. The next night the team will be at home to greet Crystal Lake. Now, everybody knows that Libertyville has a good team and Crystal Lake has the team that should go places in this region. It all adds up to a tough road to follow. However, the Warriors showed us in the Barrihgton game that they have a right to wear the name. Let's watch 'on. Our first Christmas card arrived this week from none other than one of our favorite MCHS linemen of a few years back, "Tfemmy" Thomas. It sort of gave us a chill.' We hadn't realized that the long, long trail since last Christmas is hear the end of the line. Herman Dowe says he roes his shopping on Dec. 24 so we ace sure to have company. - This is the time of year when people tell how the'y are going to "cut down this year" -- then get started and cut loose. A late bulletin from one of our co-workers is that Crystal Lake fears Barrington. You can slice that any way you like. In these days when too much stress is put on 'teen-age problems by grouping problem 'teenagers • with the good kids in a critical way, it is nice to hear a comment as we heard, from an outsider this week. The way we heard it our MCHS wrestling team members, can take good care ot themselves in any company and are a "fine bunch of gentlemen." On Saturday, Nov. 26, the'rifle club met to decide who the club champion would be in the "sitting position." Pat Buckie, Who also holds the club "standing" champ award, won this second champion award. On Monday evening a selected group of boys represented oOr club in the N.R.A. Junior Postal matches. These matches are set up by the N.R.A. (National Rifle Ass'n.) to offer winter shooting programs and competition between our club and others throughout the United States. The N.R.A. places our club in a series of matches in November, December, January and February. The top teams across the U.S.A. receive honorary awards. Our club is participating in two divisions -- the "A" open to all junior club members and the "D" which is restricted to boys under 14 years of age. We met at our range to shoot off the November postal match targets. On Friday evening, Dec. 2, there was a meeting in a club member's home. We met at Roy Miller's home. Unfortunately, only half the members who were notified appeared for the meeting. Though the group was small, we covered some very good subjects on firearms education and it is too bad that these other members missed out on such important subjects. The instructor hopes for more parental cooperation to see that these classes are not overlooked. On Saturday morning the Mc- Cullom Lake section of the club also held their class meeting. The club membership of 21 boys has again become chartered and affiliated with the National Rifle Association of America. All the sport stores and bait shops(. have their ice fishing tackle on display. There are some new things on the market and we advise all ice fishermen to look into them. For instance, the other day we saw a new type of real for ice rod#. It had' ah adjustable drag and was very reasonably priced. There are also many new spoons and ice fishing flies. Another thing that is almost a necessity to ice fishermen is a good pair of insulated boots. They are the best bet to keep your feet warm all day long. Fishermen did 'pretty well on Pistakee Bay last Saturday and we heard one fellow had 190 .bluegills. That is. enough to supply all his relatives and neighbors. One man put out a tip-up and the wind set it off five or six times. The last time it went up he thought it was the wind again and didn't bother looking at it; but he; Was mistaken. After a couple of minutes his tip-up was suddenly broken in two and what was left of ^ was towed under the ice. Well, there was one very angry fisherman stomping around the ice after that event. Jerry • Raycraift had something strange happen to him this week. He set a trap where he knew a fox was running and when he checked it he found the fox had chewed out. He had been caught by both front feet and chewed them both off, one at the "wrist" and the other at the "elbow." I never heard of a fox doing this and I'll bet lots of others haven't either.
