Fold into sugar. Add dates, nuts, bread crumbs, salt and vanilla. Mix lightly; Spoon into baking dish 8x10x3 or one of equal volume but shallow. Bake' one hour in slow oven, 250^275 degrees. When cool, serve in squares about 3x3, with vanilla ice cream on top. ' Store left-over pudding covered, in refrigerator.
