' CHRISTMAS 1954 SET RECORD FOR SUMfN DEATHS 504 Persons Died .Holiday Weekend, 60 Fire Victims After they put the blaze out, firemen counted twelve dead -- ten of them children. The time ? Christmas, 1954 -- the worst on record when measured in terms of sudden death from traffic accidents, fires, falls, drownings, and other miscellaneous mishaps. In all, 504 persons that Christinas weekend died as a result of accidents. And sixty of them yrere fire's victims. ' A weekend later, New Year's, 1955, 340 more met sudden death, this time twenty-six by fire. And when fi#e was the fcause, how had it occurred? Why? Was it the galy-lighted Christinas tree? Defective wiring? A lighted cigarette carelssly® discarded ? It could (have <been any one of $hese causes or one of many others as well. , But when all are reduced to a Cbrfution denominator, the cause is carelessness. And this can be avoided. Take the Christmas tree, for Instance. It's a potential fire hazard and caution should be taken in its selection, placement in the home and maintenance. You can play it safe by choosing a small one. There will be thirty million on the market. Keep it outdoors until a few days before setting up. During that time occasionally throw water over it. This will keep it moist, fresh. When you bring • the tree inside, cut the butt slantwise to open the pores, then stand it in a tub of water. Be wary of chemicals or other substances sold for "fireproofing" trees. In some cases this process is ineffective. In placing the tree, it's best tc avoid "hot spots" such as those near the fireplace, stove, television set, radiator, or. electric bulbs. Never use untreated .pa/per ornaments or untreated cotton batting or gauze for decoration. Cotton and gauze can be made flame-resistive by dipping in a gallon of water mixed with nihe ounces of borax and four ounces of boric acid. Also, use only electric lights, never candles. Be sure, too, that wires are in good condition and bear the UL mark, denoting Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., which shows they have been tested for safety. Frayed electric cords are a fire hazard. The switch for turning on the tree lights should be placed some distance from the tree. Never use an outlet or plug under the tree or run electric trains around the base. DUCK BANDING The first large scale banding of wild ducks in Illinois is now being carried on in Union county by field men of the state Department of Conservation. When the job is done, some 10,000 ducks will be carrying leg bands. Hunters have been asked to look closely at all ducks they bag, and to send leg bands or numbers to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington, D.C. The bands, returned, give information on the migration of ducks, the numbers killed by hunters, and the survival ratio of drakes to hens -- all of which will ^ be helpful in game management work. CAP.PENTlER S c c r c t 3 rv of 5 t . i t j As the winter season nears its official opening, the hours of daylight continue to be shortened. As the hours of darkness increase, so do the hazards of nighttime driving. \ Statistics show that) <ra a "mile* age"vba^i8 theiVare more highway fatallnesaui^tfgjthe winter (when there ftye mdre Hours' of darkness) than during the summer. PigureB also reveal that on a "mileage" basiB there are approximately three times as many highway deaths during the hours of darkness than there are during daylight hours. Although there are fewer miles driven during the hours of darkness, three out of every Ave fatal accidents occur after dark. There are ways to help cut down on the number of deaths after dark. For one thing, take proper car© of your headlights as an improperly directed headlight may blind the driver of an oncoming vehicle and is of little use to you. Glob of Iilihois commemorated its twenty-fifth anniversary by staging another great Chicago flower show. The first Chicago flower show was presented in 1927. Local- garden clubs, not yet incorporated at that time, were invited to participate by the commercial florists. The cltibs responded to this invitation enthusiastically, it Was at this time that the idea of a state federation of garden clubs was born. By 1929, officers were elected and the Garden Club of Illinois came into being and was incorporated. Twenty-seven clubs became charter members and the federation grew1 until at preseht it comprises some 200 garden clubs throughout the state of Illinois. The Chicago flower shows of 1931 and 1932 were outstanding successes under the artistic lead ership of the president of the Garden Club of Ilinois, Mrs. W. L. Karcher of Freeport. By 1941 the Chicago Flower show at Navy Pier had become a tradition, when at the outlet of the war the government commandeered the Pier. Mrs. Joseph CurfaHy saved the show when she gained permission to stage an outdoor show at Thornhill farm, the estate of her father. As the war years marched on, • • v'j V'--- '• .*4-- * . ' ;it seemed that the great Chicago flower show was doomed. This time Marshall Field and company came to the rescue with "Fashions i^i Flowers," which it sponsored from 1943 to 1947. In 1949, the first Christmas show to be presented by a major garden club federation was a spectacular event at the Stevens hotel. The flower shows are entirely amateur in that tlj,e^-plans C are mad£ and executeffoy th here themselves. The showV-are not, however, the only projects of the Garden club. One of the greatest of their activities is the Lincoln Memorial Garden which was dedicated in 1938. This memorial covers 60 acres on the shores of Lake Springfield and is so lockted that one can view, a few mileis to the north, the city of Springfield with its many Lincoln shrines. A flower show school is conducted for the purpose of training judges for both horticultural and flower arrangements. A conservation school at Lake Villa teaches participation in the program, "Friends of the Land." In 1942 the Garden Club of Illinois turned all of its strength into the development of interest in Victory Gardens. This back yard movement helped to solve the food problem of the war years. Flowers to hospital wards, library plantings, flowers and plants to service centers were among the war time activities of the club. The Garden club's affiliation with the Chicago Plant, Flower and Fruit Guild provides the club with' a natural philanthropic opportunity. Through the guild, flowers ;and fresh produce are sent to hospitals, settlement houses, day nurseried and old people's homes. Highway beautification is another activity of th6 Garden club. Thus it becomes evident that the club does not exist alone for the amusement of its members. Although the McHenry club has been organized only in the 7 last four years, it follows the pattern set by the other clubs in the 9tate. One of the most papular projects is the annual garden Show in August in which the community is given the privilege of participating. At Christmas time the club sends gift-filled stockings to the Hartlahd home for old people "and candy favors to some of the patients at Villa Nursing home and Shan-gra-!a. Mrs. Gonaeth and Mrs. George Stilliilg have each served two years as president of this Club. *Hxu®sd*y».Decainb«r 1& 1955^ ' :----: " • " T v AT BOSTON CONVJWlIOIt: ; Louis C.
