Among the* contenders was Mrs. C. S. Howard who at that time (1935) had been a subscriber for fifty-eight years, and a reader of the^-paper for sixty years. In all^those years she received the paper at the same address^ in McHenry. Her subscription went back to 1877. Mrs. Howard and her_ husband spent the early years of their , life at Big Hollow, now known as Grant township. In those days Volo was called Forksville --- perhaps because of the f.ork in the road ? James Perry, who came to McHenry after the Civil War, was ^pne of the old subscribers. J. H.v Freund was another. He came here from Germany in 1850 and settled in Johnsburg. John F. Claxton, who, in 1935, had lived on the sama farm for seventy-four years, . remembered the Plaindealer since it first entered his home about sixty years Wore that. Just as now we are interested in the "Forty Years Ago" column in our paper, so then were they interested not only in the current happenings but in what had transpired Earlier. Just as the Indians drew pictures and the Egyptians inscribed their history with hieroglyphics, so the modern press records the history-making events of today. The history of a newspaper is inextricably enmeshed with the history of the community which it serves. It provides a written record of births and deaths. It announces the happy events as well as the catastrophies, both personal and public. The small town newspaper is more than a means of communication, it is a mirror wHich reflects the lives of neighbors and the progress of the community. It is wbnderful to know that \a simple turn of the dial will bring^ to us important incidents from all over 'the world, it is just as exciting for us to knggr that a new fire station With modern equipment stands ready to protect ouf homes and property. What good can it do us to read in the metropolitan newspapers that stocks have risen 10 percent by the Dow-Jones averages if our corn crop and that of our neigh toors' has been destroyed toy the borer. Through our own paper we gain comfort in knowing that this disaster was not sent to punish us alone. By knowing how our neighbor, solves his problems, we can better cope with our own. The small town newspaper brings together those in distress and those who have help to Offer. It brings together the merchant and the consumer. It cements friendships, it advances "causes," it fosters tolerance and it strengthens religion. A smali town, newspaper not only records history, tt, is an integral part of histoly in the making.
