II11II IHil HEALTH TALK The Body's Arterial System The arteries and blood vessels of tlje body are tunnel-like structures which vary in length and size to- fogn a complex transportation system to carry the blood to all parts of the body. Important .structures in this network of arteries and blood vessels are the arterioles, or the branch endings which are weblike in makeup.. When, for any reason, these arterioles are constricted or narrowed, the outflow of blood from the arteries is impeded. An increase in blood pressure may result, the educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society observes in a health talk. With the normal amount of blood coursing through the arterial system by the regular pumping of the heart, only to be impeded or slowed up in the outflow through the arterioles, one can understand how the change in pace could cause the blood pressure to rise. Your body is a complex, chemical factory, composed of millions and millions of cells which, in turn, act singly or in groups as laboratories^ to maintain the processes essential to life. Nutrient materials, oxygen and other substances are chemically converted within these cellular laboratories to encourage growth, repair tissue and produce energy and heat. The cellular laboratories are maintained by the' transportation system combined of the Heart, arteries and other blood vessels and blood. The heart provides the motor power to propel the blood in the arteries; the arteries serve as channels through which the blood flows, and the blood carries the raw materials to the cells and removes the waste products. When this teamwork is progressing normally, there is little fluctuation in the blood pressure level. This does not mean, however, that the condition of the arteries and their branch endings, the arterioles, is mainly responsible for an elevation of blood pressure. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, may develop in association with any one of numerous diseases. Then there is the type of high blood pressure that is not identified with any disease. This type is called essential hypertension. Here,, however, the term essential does not have its ordinary meaning. Rather the condition is so named because there is neither an obvious cause or association with any disease that may be considered a cause, j There are two levels of blood ' pressure, apart from the normal ' range: systolic blood pressure is I the pressure within an artery at EARN EXTRA DIVIDENDS SAVE by January 15th EARN the 1st CURRENT RATE 2W' Plus Vi% EXTRA We will to our NSW LOCATION at 50 N. Your heart is said to be in systole at the moment it contracts. Diastolic pressure As the blood pressure within the arteries at its lowest level; that is between' heart bekts and' at the moment when no blood is being pumped into the arteries. Thus, briefly we can see the role the arteries play in blood pressure. While the exact cause of high blobd pressure is not known, careful evaluation by a physician is needed to discover just why your blood flow is being impeded, causing your blood pressure to rise.
