; fig® t -AjB- ftkenHrV " You basketball fans have a busy weekend coming- up. On Friday night you can watch the Warrior teams play Zion-Benton here in conference games. Saturday night marks the opening of the' county tournament which will be played at Woodatock high. McHenry plays St. Mary's of Woodstock in this game at 9:15 p.m. At one o'clock Sunday afternoon the third annual parish tournament opens in the MCHS gym. So -- away we go! It promises to be,a merry round. Think a fellow ought to carry a pillow for all those games. Nobody beats our Warriors by a big score this year, but most everybody-, beats - them. And you cant say a word against our; boys except that they foul too much. They really are a bunch that stays in the scrap. Basketball has changed a whole lot since McHenry, last won a county championship. That was back in 1925. We just reviewed the old files for George Sullivan and Don Peasley, who are compiling a history of county tournament play. McHenry won that championship by a score of 22 to 19 "--over Hebron. " Gus FTeund played center and was the tall man for McHenry. Captain Dick Overton paired with "Zeke" Bacon as one of the fastest passing forwards you could hope to see. ine waiting orouners, jesse and Sib, were guards, both with good eyes, but Sib received an injury in the district tournament finals at Elgin so was lost to the team for the county meet. Bill Nye was supposed to replace Sib, but along came illness to knock him out of the lineup. Adrian" Thomas and "Torchy" foaus/ were in the lineup that night'and gave a good account of thfettiSelves (Mire remember). FREE THROWS AGAIN THROW WARRIORS AT LAKE FOREST 71-65 . ' Points on free throws again beat our MCH^ warrior varsity basketball Team. This time it was at Lake Forest last Friday night find the final score was 71 to 65. Scoring was sharp on both sides as the game got under way. John Huff dribbled in for a short shot to open the scoring and added a free throw when he. was fouled. But, John wasn't around long in this game. He had four fouls in the second quarter and was pulled out to be used at the finish. John scored 16 points during his brief stay. He went in to start the final quarter, but had his fifth foul (a very close call) as. soon as the referee could get his whistle to his mouth. Jim Huemann, replacing Huff, put his usual spirit into the game and scored 11 points. However, Jim was aiso lost on fouls. Wright was also another victim of the wliistle. McHenry lost three men on fouls and Lake Forest two. The difference was that McHenry's lineup was weakened earlier in the game. Garrey, Swan and Reilly were sharpshooters for the winners, Garrey, one yof' the finest ball handlers in the league, sank 6 out of i ?ch£uicefr-pn free throws in the last quarter when the Warriors^ were forced to chase him to break up the old control game. Lake Forest scored 27 points on free throws out of 39 tries. McHenry had 19 out of 36. But, forgetting free. throws, had the Warriors been more careful with their .passes or had they moved C&t to meet ' their passes they cSuld have had a victory. When "Zeke" fouled -out C<inly 4 fouls at that time) Hebron went ahead 19 to 18. That's when Captain Dick (who climbed out of a sick bed to pray for Coach Stringer) came through with two long shots described in the Plaindealer write^tip~8S'~"nifty " That did it. We. also found one old box score of a county tournament back , in 1916 when McHenry beat Crystal Lake 21 to 20 for what was termed the county championship. The third annual parish basketball tournament will start next Sunday, Jan. 15, in the McHenry Community high school. This tournament is sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus, McHenry Council No. 1288. This annual event was previously held during the Christmas holiday season, but has been changed to avoid the busy season and still avoid any conflict with other events. The question of continuing the tournament was quickly settled by players from various parishes. Some feel that they can place stronger teams on the floor this year and are anxious to give it a hard try for the championship cup. St, Thomas of Crystal Lake meets the Christ the King team of Wonder Lake in the opening game Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Seems we can remember a delegation being present to greet the team the next morning as they returned from Crystal Lake by train. Believe it or not, there is talk flying around about baseball prospects for next summer. Bfll Bolger is working toward the formation of a Pony League. THE GREAT OUTDOORS COUNTY TOURNEY OPENS SATURDAY AT WOODSTOCK ^ McHenry Warriors Meet St. Mary's At 9:15 Saturday Another year nas rolled around and cofne Saturday night of this week, Jan. 14, the McHenry County Basketball Tournament will get off to a flying start in the Woodstock high school gymnasium. The locals had games' pt 952-920-1058. Woodstock beat them with 966 pins in the second game. Then came a flock of fouls and Lake Forest outscored McHenry 18 to 5 in the second quarter. Kuhlman sank 7 out of 8 triea from the free throw line in this period. Ice fishing is at low ebb as of late. The fish seem to bite in streaks of one day to one week straight, then they stop. At Lake Geneva the perch seem to be running a bit smaller. Fishing the shallow water of Lake Geneva isn't too hard. All you have to do is look in the hole and see if the fish are down there. When a school is moving through, the action is fast and furious, but then it stops just likesomeone had thrown an electric switch. Some big northerns are being pulled out of Lake Geneva and we heard that a fellow caught a 17% pounder at Lake Delavan on,, a 4 pound test leader. He really must have known how to handle a big one. The bluegills don't seem to be hitting good anywhere this week. Maybe some lucky fellow will hit a big school now and then, but they aren't biting consistently. Crappie fishing at Twin Lakes is reported to have been good about two weeks ago. Some northerns and walleyes have been caught there too this year. All we can do is keep trying. The 1956 Illinois fishing and hunting licenses are now available. Non-resident Wisconsin licenses will be available in April. Resident and non-resident licenses may be purchased at local sporting goods stores, bait shops, hardware stores, various business places, resorts and at the city clerk's office. tournament and^evive some of the interest lost in the county tournament. McHenry is a stranger to championship honors, but has been in the finals several times. This year the Warriors start off in competition with the spirited team Representing St. Mary's of Woodstock. All teams will be gunning for the Crystal Lake five which rates as the leading team in the county. Many sports followers feel that Richtnori<i is the dark horse in this year's tournament. They are said to carry real scoring punch, but probalbly lack size and depth to go all the way* School officials have decided on some changes this year. Four trophies will be awarded, giving the better teams a chance to tote home some recognition for their efforts. Another change will find the two defeated teams of the semifinals playing the preliminary game before the championship. The tournament starts off Saturday night, resumes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They are now going over the factors of marksmanship in the prone position. They will use the "shooter-coach" method of rifle training, where one boy shoots and the . ther boy coaches, then they change places and the first boy coaches while the other shoots. This method gives the shooter a coach to aid him and help him correct ,v small errors that suffect his scores, and the coach also learns how these same errors are to be avoided to improve his own scores, that every good coach is also a good shot. There were several marksmanship awards won. Denny Marshall and "Buzz" Jensen won sharpshooter. "Butch" Miller won both pro-marksman and marksman. Terry Harth won marksian first class. A future plan was mentioned in the meeting for the rifle club to rent a patch of grounds and woodlands for actual meetings under the exact conditions that would exist in their future hunting trips. This will also give the boys a chance to hunt and shoot on their own rented ground and learn the many safety and conservation laws that will confront them in the shooting world. All the bOys are anxious to try for game and the fun that goes with it. We will "shop" around for a suitable piece of ground early in the spring. If by chance any landowner reads our column and has a piece of ground available for our club, we would appreciate his calling McHenry 535-R-l and letting us talk to hiim.
