Ite .Ailed in the Edison building 72 West Adams street, the large-scale computer is the first of its kind in Chicago and the first to be put in service by a public utility anywhere. The machine will gradually take over the job of billing more than a million Chicago customers and doing the related bookkeeping work. The computer is expected to be issuing all the Chi- ^go electric bills, by next Au- In 1957, it will also take Over the job of billing approximately 800,000 customers in the Public Service company division outside the city. i-. Although the big computer la called a "brain," it cannot really think. It can only handle data which people feed it, and it must be given very detailed instructions. There are 85,000 different mstructions just to tell the ma- [ chine how to figure bills and' { process accounts. | On the other hand, the machine i is phenomenally fast. In one minute it can read the equivalent of a dozen full-length novels or do a quarter of a million add-orsubtract problems. Unlike the human brain, the computer is sensitive |.o changes in temperature and humidity. It must be operated at temperatures ranging between 60 and 80 degrees in a relative humidity of 40 to 60 per cent. Officially named "the IBM-702 Electronic Data Processing Machine," the "computer weighs over 20 tons and consists of thirtyfive separate units. The .heart of the machine is an arithmetical and logical unit that does the figuring and a bank of cathoderay tubes which remembers the answers. The memory tubes look like little television tubes. Other units include an operating console, where the operator sits, card readers, punches, printers, and fourteen units which hold rolls of magnetic tape. £ This magnetic tape is similar I to the type used in home-record-! i n g d e v i c e s . Coach Ned Morgensen used fifteen players trying to hold the score down, but his second and third stringers provided plenty of action so there wasn't too much need of playing his regulars after they had a rugged three days in the Mctfenry county tournament the same week. Clinton was defeated the same night by an improved Capron team by two points. By losing, Clinton dropped into second place behind the Rockets so the local boys are out in front of the Suthern Regional by one full game now and just four g&ihes to go in conference play. Tfils win was the Rockets' ninth win in ten starts in conference, play and their twenty-third win out of twenty-four in conference pl&y over a two-year period.
