1fm' Ar SUBS We are worrying about space IK>r a heavy load of sports news BO will try to pick up the loose Isiids in this corner. The Illinois State Semi-Pro Baseball tournament will be glayed in s Elgin's Wing Park starting July 18. Here's a game to watch ^ Johnsburg comes to town next Sunday to play the Shamrocks. JUNIOR LEGION By Jimmy Kupec In other county league frames, Richmond goes to Crystal' Lake, Algonquin plays the V.F.W. at Elgin and Elgin Merchants travel to Hebron. Charles Hiller, a flashy ball player, won a letter at the College of St. Thomas. We couldn't gather too much news on our high school baseball team, . but learn they fin- Shed with a 6-6 record. Enjoyed a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Ben Dietz a few days ago. Frank Kempfer was their chauffer but didn't wear his uniform. They get the Plaindealer out in California and want us to keep them posted on euch important characters as John Dreymiller. The Johnsburg Tigers won a close one from Elgin V.F.W. last Sunday, 3 to 2. Guess Hank Hiller forgot the box score. Jim Nicholas repeated as table tennis champion at the Junior High and Karen B^ley is the new girls' champion. A group of local roller skaters are competing at the Swank Roller Rink at 111th and Western today. Maybe we can get a report for next week. Wish them luck. Next Thursday, June 14, has been designated National Little League Polio Day. Bill Bolger tells us that McHenry will participate. Attend and give a little extra if possible. Last year over $50,000 was raised for the fund through Little League activities. The McHenry Junior Legion baseball team pounded three Union-Marengo pitchers for nine hits and a 9-3 win at Marengo Sunday. Gene Freund pitched good ball for McHenry, allowing all the runs and all four hits in one inning, the fifth. The local team played errorless ball with the work of Jack Schaefer at shortstop being outstanding. Roger Benson caught his first game and turned in an excellent job. Joe Hiller's two run homer put McHenry in the lead in the second. Tom. Roti's homer and Bob Meyer's hit following a walk to Bujak stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Joe Hiller's double and Jack Schaefer's single were the key blows in the three run fifth. Ackman's three run homer in the bottom^ of the fifth cut McHenry's lead to 7-3. Successive hits byT Bob Meyer, Gene Freund and Herb Baker accounted for the final two runs. McHenry will play Cary on the Johnsburg field Sunday in the first round of the elimination tournament to determine a district champion. McHenry (9) Bujak 3b R. Bennett, who disposed of Hal Nillis in the race for the directors' cup. The Peoria all-bracket winners were John Varese, first, and Norm Knaack, _ second. Harry Hans and Walter c Kadisak tied for first place honors in the blind bogey event. The two-ball foursonje. trophy winners were Mrs. Nick Justen and Doc Fike. Harry Hans and Carmen Gardner, Mrs. John Busscher and R. G. Orthwein tied for second place honors. Tuesday, June 5, the ladies' golf association had a bringalong- arguest day and the lucky guests who won prizes were Grace Goffo, Helen Johnson, Rose Kluk, Peggy Love, Marge Ingles and Dorothy Hollander. The regular members who were winners were Emily Hester, Marion Donnelly, Stephanie Waynne, Carmon Antonson, Eve Varese and Edna Mae Johnson. I'm sure the guests would like to express their thanks for a wonderful day. The event of the day was A.B.C. play and the first three winners were Joan Buss, Betty Wilkenson and Edna Mae Johnson. The second three winners were Dorothy Freund, Dorothy Beckenbaugh and June Rink. The last three winners were Helen Miller, Rose Muska and Marion Donnelly. Chapel Hill Golf course reports that Bill Long is coming up fas^ as a golfer as he turned in a pair of 43's. Carl and Doc are still at their bloodless throats as Carl had best ball and Doc won all the golf balls. What happened to Frank Bitterman? Or is he still out planting corn? Jack Sherwood, pro from Crystal Lake C.C., turned in a fancy 34 in touring a fast nine. Wally (T.V.), it is claimed, plays better golf out of an electric cart than he does walking. Editor's Note Jimmy wrote a column that was lost in the shuffle with other sports news last week. Time nor space permit picking it up this week. Just in case you golfers are keeping a scrap booft, we will try to record such items as Ed Buss breaking the 'course record in next week's issue. THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER-v ELGIN MERCHANTS WIN 7 TO 6 GAME ' ' FROM McHENRY NINE In a game played at Elgin last Sunday, the McHenry Shamrocks dropped a close ball game 7 to 6 to the Merchants. Any time you find that truth stands in your way you may be very sure that you are headed In the wrong direction. The carp were really running in Boone Creek last week. Bow and arrow enthusiasts were in their glory. Wednesday was the best day. The banks on both sides were lined with bow hunters and fellows with spears. We don't think Frank Gende's boys even went home for meals. Bass and bluegill fishing is getting better all the time. Fox Lake has been pretty good lately, especially in the channels. Pistakee Bay is pretty good over near Skidmore's. The bluegills run fair size over there. You have to keep moving along the shore line and you pick up a few here and there. Our old friend, Joe Guzzardo, has been laid up with a bum leg, but it won't be long and he will be out fishing again. . C.O.F. The new champs are the first to break Junior High's three year reign on this championship. Director Jim Doran reports that the caliber of play this year is the best he has seen in the tournament during the last four years. He attributes a part of this improvement to the experience gained by some of the boys last summer in the Little League. Every one of the five teams can boast of a full complement .of sharp players. Some of the plays that have taken place in practice sessions would put a sparkle in the crown of any big league star. -The managers are displaying as keen an edge as that of the boys. In fact the spirit of rivalry among them promises some live' ly contests. By this time, next week, the schedule of play' will be worked out and when our. uniforms arrive, which will be within ten days, the season will be off to a good start. Besides the credit which must be given to the managers and coaches who are devoting a great deal of time and effort working with the boys, we must hot forget the generous people.
