PONY LEAGUE OPENED AT VFW PARK SUNDAY Impressive Program Starts Young Boys Off On Right Foot . T$e show got under way as the VM* Drum and Bugle Corps, in theii?;, sharp new uniforms, marched onto* the diamond, followed by managers, coaches and their teams. Of course, the boys were decked out in new uniforms-- thanks to generous sponsors. An enthusiastic group of young and not so young people of our community gathered at the V.F.W. j-and ball diamond last Sunday for the opening ceremoyaies of the Pony League. A group of men, interested in the welfare of young boys, spent many hours in preliminary work and planning to bring about the formation of this league. Sizeable donations from sponsors • were necessary to defray the expense of outfitting teams. It's carnival time at Johnsburg arid the ball game is set up as a special attraction. The Chicago Stars will furnish the oppositiop, a team that carries a 4-0 record in league play 7-2 in exhibitions against such strong teams as Fifth Army, Glenview Naval Air Station. The Stars are players who have gained recognition in college, military and various allstar teams. Arnold Hartock, former baseball coach at U. of I., Navy Pier, is the manager of the visiting team. Every young player had a bit to contribute. If it were just going down swinging, it was going down with enthusiasm. Robert Anderson, left fielder for the Giants, was there and I mean there. Very few balls got by him. The first double play, last of the fifth, in the first game, was a neat one: Pitcher Houck to S.S. Gate's to 1st base, Wahl. The first home run was hit by Robert Anderson (Giants) followed by homers by Geinosky and Sanford. Bill Geinosky (Spx) turned in a brilliant . pitching performance. James Vavrik, aided and abetted by a wad of bubble gum, was an able catcher. He didn't miss a play j even if he did pause to blow a bubble. Minor league games will be played on Monday nights at 6:30 and a double header on Saturday afternoons at 1:30 and 3:30. Major league games will be played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights at 6:30. On Sunday afternoons there will, be a triple header - 12:30 - 2:15 - 4 p.m. The reason for this change in games is to keep a night open for rained out games and also a night to clean up the diamond. As president of the Little League in McHenry, I feel that the officers, managers and coaches are doing a real good job. We all think ^hat we have the finest group of youngsters in these United States. Our managers and coaches are doling the hardest work to keep this league up to the standard this community wants it to be. But, we are not getting the cooperation of the parents thet we had last year. So why not come out and See your boys play ball. It will ^iake them play better and I'm surte- it will put the officers and I managers in higher spirits and ; keep doing more and more for | these youngsters.
