Last week we reported that Mrs. Cliff Kyntt was ready and willing to start a Softball program for girls. • On Monday of this week about, 36 or 37 girls turned out for practice 011 the city diamond and had the time of (heir life,., Some of the girls handled themselves with real class. ILLINOIS STATE BASEBALL MEET STARTS AT ELGIN Johnsburg Tigers Play Utica Yanks ' At 6:30 Tonight The 21st annual Illinois State Baseball Tournament started on Wednesday of this week at Wing Park, Elgin, bringing together sixteen strong teams from various parts of the state. •Local interest will focus on two McHenry county teams this (Thursday) evening as Johnsburg and Crystal Lake battle their opponents to try to get by j the first round and move toward i the coveted championship. I At .6:30 p.m., the Johnsburg | Tigers play the Utica Yanks artd la large following is expected to ; be present to, boost the Tigers j on to victory. j The Crystal Lake ninfc will bring a hustling team, - rating third in the county league, to the tournament and may have the pitching to cause plenty of trouble. Of course, that's against the rules! McHenry Shamrocks have had a dull season, but would call the season fairly complete if they could beat Johnsburg next Sunday on the Tigers' diamond. The odds are big but the boys are going to give it a good try. "Anonymous" is back in our corner this week after an unexcused absence. Every now and then this happens and the front office tries to put the finger on the identity of this per«on by figuring who might be vacafion;ng. We dunno. Let's say our White Sox have met with reverses. We just started to record how thankful we were to have Ed Doyle off our mail route these days w'en in walks -- you guessed -- nobody else but that man Doyle. He expressed great sympathy, but that little, grin an that map of Ireland told us another story. Up to this point we haven't had to meet Junior Freund -- that loyal Cub fan. When we arrived at our destination, we could see about half a dozen big trout. They were lying in the pool just waiting to be caught. We rigged our rod quietly and were just about to cast when out of the bushes came a couple of mallard hens and their ducklings. One nen turned around when she saw us. The other one make a take-off across the pool and the trout scattered. When they came back they would not bite on anything. We tried wet flies, dry flies and worms, but the tish wouldn't cooperate. Here is a tip that should be helpful to fishermen: Screw hooks in the bottom of your boat seat are a good thing on which to hang plugs and feathered lures. They dry out there and don't make your tackle box rusty. A few good sized striped bass are being caught in the river. Sand flies are still the best bet for live bait. In the second game Sunday, the Giants' big bats beat the Sox 16-3. John Gates distinguished himself with five hits in five times at bat, including a home run. Ben Chelini climaxed the Giants' 7th inning with a home run. There will be some surprising changes in the batting averages this week.
