McCullom Lake News By Eve Le*t«gw ,^y Christmas Bowling Benefit "'This Is the season when most families. are busy shopping for gifts and planning for the happy holidays ahead. Not so for the Leo Scarbrough family of Fountain Lane and Spring Road. Leo •has been ill for the past nine tnonths due to an injury sustained at htf place of employment. He has been In and out of the hospital many times, and at the preset is confined to a wheel chair, pital and doctor' bills have reached staggering figures. In addition to the medical bills, there are three young school children John, Melinda, and Marilyn, to feed and clothe. Special toys and goodies for the youngsters were out of the question this Christmas. Hearing of the family's plight, H^others, Louis and t>omonic Tom- Tfeello, of the village and Sam of Pistakee, co-owners of the Johnsburg bowling alleys, have plartned a Christmas bowling benefit for the Scarbroughs. Open bowling will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, from 8 to 12 p.m. and Monday night from 9:30 to 12 midnight. All 'proceeds realized from these hours will be turned £^er to Marion and Leo. ••For further information, call 537-M-l or 1434. Qullora-Knoll About thirty-one members gathered in the beachhouse ~Suft- •£ty afternoon for the regular, monthly meeting of the Culiom- I£noll association. A discussion of the validity of the by-laws ensued. In view of th'e recent revision of the by-laws, it was decided that they will remain as they are, tempered with ' good common sense. A liasion committee, to work with the 'teen agers, consisting Jf Elma Nelson, chairman, Betty lurray and your reporter, were appointed. A contribution of one hundred dollars was made to the McCullom Lake Social and Athletic club for the kiddies' Christmas party. Delectable little cakes and coffee were served by Katie Lennert and Elma Nelson. Holiday Ball The holiday season ahead brings on an increase in social activity. One of the brightest dates on the calendar is the Christmas fund dance which will be held Saturday, Dec. 25, at the JohnsburgiCommunity hall. The dance; is sponsored by the McCullom Lake Social and Athletic club to help pay for the annual children's Christmas party. This is one date you won't want to miss. Tickets may be obtained from any member of the club, or call Fred Matthesius at 713. - The Welcome Mat Was spread for the Rev.. and Mrs. Ci Karl Eklof and daughters, Melanie and Shari, df Decatur at the ijfcreld Osburn hoihe last week. Signe Osburn and Mrs. Eklof are sisters. Pastor Eklof and his family will return to the local scene in February, at which time he will speak at the Nativity Lutheran church, Wonder Lake, during Evangelism week. Dinner Gnests Helen and Paul Nitz were overjoyed on Sunday with a visit from Helen's sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Farrington, of Chicago. The Fprringtons brought along William T. Jester, a spry "young" fellow of 86! The Farringtons and Mr. Jester were completely captivated by rural life. Improve Your Health And have fun doing it! Public shooting will be held every Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 on the Granger property, south of Rt. 120 on the Ringwood road. Capable instructors will be on hand to teach beginners the fine points of shooting with safety. A glowing bonfire and sandwiches for everyone should stimulate appeal for this sport. President of the Sportsmen's club, Gene Johnson, extends a cordial invitation to everyone. If you don't care to shoot, it's fun to watch! John J. Westwood of Wonder Lake was picked up for speeding and fined Sunday. Use of the Beachhouse The village beachhouse is open to any club or organization desiring a meeting place.. Arrange-' ments may be made through the Culloni-Knoll association of' Ed Hammerstein, Sr., chairman of the beach committee. A small fee is .'charged to -defray the cast cof janitor service and heating* Controlled Shooting, Members of th€ "controlled shooting area, in conjunction with the McCullom Lake Sportsmen's Club, met on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Schwartz farm near Greenwood. • The fellows were informed they will be able to hunt chucker partridges in addition to pheasants^ Each member will be assessed fifteen dollars for the control feeding and management of migrating wild life. The assessment inust be paid on or before March 15, 1957, to Nick Tabor, treasurer; ' The then are in the process of trying to obtain 400 acres more, in addition to the property they already have. If the deal goes through, membership in the controlled shooting area will be reopened. Sportsmen's club The regular monthly meeting Will be held, Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. in the beachhouse. All members and any mar. interested in learning more about conservation and wild life is cordially invited to attend. No Laughing Matter!! Gene Piotrowski came in for plenty of sympathy last week when he donned a "neck stretching horse collar" on doctors orders. Gene had fun while suffering! telling "tall tales" which ranged from having tangled with a mountain lion to running into a train! The truth will out--and it did, in his case. A rheumatic affliction put Gene in harness. He has had plenty of pain with it and we sinccrely hope his suffering will end soon. Ladles of the Lake - The gals will treat themselves to a Christmas party next Thursday, Dec. 13, at the beachhouse at 8 p.m. The committee has promised game*' and surprises galore. Everyone attending is asked to bring a dollar exchange gift to make the evening more interesting* ' The ladies are procuring a 60- 80 cup coffee urn by celling bottles of vanilla. Birthday Girl In , honor of their daughter, Cathy's fifth birthday last week, Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Schmitt served duck dinner for Grandma and Grandpa Schmitt, Uncle Bud Schmitt and sons, Mike and Bobby. . The fellows had a grand time and arrived home on Saturday, Dec. 1, fifed with ambition. Oh yes? Birthday Folks Mr. and Mrs. Milton Lawrence of Elgin and daughter, Pertly, journeyed up. for a pre-birthday celebration for Mrs. Dorie Brenuan. Her natal day was yesterday, Dec. 5, and Dorie admits to being a "leetle over 21." Mrs. Anna Deskis was surprised with the nice gifts she received from husband Sam and son, Raymond, on Sunday Dec. 2. Signe Osborn is looking forward to her birthday tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 7. Tommy Ringelstetter is expecting a double holster and gun set for his day Sunday, Dec. 9. Ole Olsen will be thrilled to hear his favorite daughter, Margie, sing "Happy Birthday" to him on Monday, Dec. 10.
