NATIONAL GAMES Although most card games belong to families--for example Canasta's family tree is Rummy--spme have become known as distinctly national in character and do not ..belong to any particular card family. These card games have been played for generations by the great masses of a nation while the so-called upper classe s h a v e moved from o n e c a r d game fad to another. Hqre are ten such games still enjoyihg popularity in the countries where they originated many years ago. Note that the United States, England and France each have two national games. / Casino and Euchre--America. The former is an ancient game that due to an early printer's error is frequently spelled with two s's. Often considered strictly a child's game. Casino is good for the entire family and actually one of the best of all two-handed games. Euchre, like Poker, is suppose^ to have been introduced to America by the Louisiana French. One authority believes it started with an attempt to play Spoil Five with a/Piquet deck <32-card deck with all cards below 7 left put). Two to seven may play the game. Crib.bage and Napoleon--England. One of the oldest and most unique of all card games, Cribbage is on* of the few games wherein memory does/not play an important role. It is best for two persons. What skill is to Cribbage, luck is to Napoleon. Also called Nap, ft is one of the easiest of all card games to learn and can be played by any number. Four make the best game. Ecarte and Piquet--France. Many experts say that Ecarte, another good game for two persons, is the French' cousin of the American game of Euchre. Piquet is one of the fastest moving two handed games known and was a special favorite'of the Emperor Napoleon. Skat--Germany. Believed to have originated among the farmers Of Thuringia, a province of Saxony, Skat is preferred by many card players to the more blue-blooded Whist. It is still a popular game for threfe players all over Germany and has many«adherents in the United States. Spoil Five--Ireland. One of, th® Oldest of all card games, it is characterized by wide-open play. Derived from the ancient gdine of Maw, the favorite recreation of James the I, it is played by five or six participants, Conquian--Mexico. Sometimes corrupted to "Coon-can," it is the grandaddy, of the modern games of Rummy. A two-player game, it is also •very popular in those states bordering Mexico, particularly Texas. Vint--Russia. Similar to Bridge and Whist, this national game of Russia has been called at times "Bridge without a dummy" and "Auction Whist." It is played by four people as partners, just as in Bridge.
