,,f ? ri &• ^ • • v ?: v>"l McHENRY .W, 13,1956 I? Here I come, ready or not. That's what we yelled in the good, old hide and seek days. And that's the Christinas tune that seems to hit us right now when our shopping problems loom bigger and bigger each day. How is it in your home? Does mother say, "Now, don't go buying me something I can't use. There are things we need for the house." Stay on the practical side,, you know. Our standard answer when asked, what we want is "a pair of Socks." And, believe it or not, nobody ever gives us a pair. Well, Roy Miller did send us on "White Sock"--but not a pair. We did get our tree early this year. Now comes the fussin' to get it decorated just so. Father puts it in the stand as the whole family eyes it to be sure it is straight. Then he sits down to watch the decorating performance. One year we planned to help with the tinsel. Our idea was to stand on a ladder and drop the tinsel--sort of letting the chips fall where they may. We found out that it has to be placed piece by piece and that our lack of artistic nature ruled us out of the picture. Christmas cards never fail to give us a thrill. We open each one carefully and mutter--"So and so never forgets"--or--"Now, we never got a card from them before" -- and holler into the other room--"Hey Mom, do we have the Blanks on our card list?" Of course, we can hurry up and send them one if it isn't too close to the deadline. Each year somebody has a real clever card and we vow to make up one of our own next year that will be original, different and sincere. We are a big boy now, but nobody is going to take Santa Claus out of our life* We go along with the idea that Santa is a good old scout who helps spread God's blessings over the world. Thomas F. fioiger has been prevailed upon to again manage the K. of C. basketball tournament. The fourth annual parish tournament will be held December 30th and January 6th in the local high school gym. Morf about that as soon' as arrangements have beep made. -Received our income tax reminder in the morning mail, then picked up the paper and noted that England has asked Uncle Sam to cancel 50 million dollars interest due in January. It gives us an idea. If they are successful, we may give it a try. • * ' • PUT STARS . IN HER EYES WITH A GIFT BY Dorothy Gray week. He looks in shape to play a couple of innings right now. Although there aren't many around who remember those games, he thought our sister, Ellen, might have some faint recollection. The Johnsburg Rescue Squad wants us to say "Thank You" for them for your support at their annual dance. Our Warriors - bit the dust in the last two games, but went down fighting. They hope to get back in stride at Lake Forest Friday night. Next Tuesday Hebron comes to town with the best record in several years. They are on the way Up after the lull that followed state championship days. . This «old spell makes us wonder how many people in our own country are in need of warm clothing. Bet there is hardly a family among us who couldn't go through the closets and pick out some articles that are not in use and probably never Will be on our backs again. It would warm our hearts to know that we had given warmth to others. We understand the Tomasello brothers are sponsoring a* benefit at their Johnsburg Bowling Alleys Sunday, December 16 and Monday, December 17--evening hours. This is to benefit the Leo Scarbrough family of McCullom Lake. Seems this family has had some tough luck and the Tomasellos and friends want to lend some Christmas cheer. You can h£lp. The Warriors outscored Zion in every period until that fatal fourth and held what appeared to be a safe 37-27 lead when the final quarter got under way. Once again fouls and 'free throws tossed the Warriors for a loss. Outscoring Zion 40 to 28 on field goals, the Warriors trailed 21 to 6 on free throws. It has oft been said that a ball game is never over until the final whistle, but the saying was never brought home so forcibly as in this game. McHenry had outscored the opposition in every quarter and led 38 to 27 going into the final round. The Little Warriors then scored the sum total of 2 points while their guests ran up 16. Kellog scored 8 points in the game and they were the,, last 8 points scored in the game. = " ri Walter Warner, who played ball for Dick Walsh in McHenryforty (yep--that's right) years ago, dropped in to say hello this 1ST FOR FUN" loller Skating link 608 Front St. on Rt. 31 McHENRY, ILL Open - Tues., Wed., Fri., Sat. & Sun. 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. SATURDAY MATINEE _ 1:30 TO 4 P.M. McHenry was simply outplayed and the stpry might end on that note except that the home team showed some bright spots which should be recorded for those not present. Right off the ybat the visitors had four points oil, McHenry fouls. The quarter ended "with the Wildcats leading 12 to 9., The leaders had scored *6 of their 12 points from the free throw line.. McHenry had scored one point from the gift port. Hiiemann Hot On Shots Jim Huemann put on a slick exhibition of shooting in the second quarter with five field goals. If he missed any in this string, we cannot remember. The Warriors led briefly, but took off for the shower room at half time trailing 31 to 26. Whether one likes to watch free throw shooting or not, those points do wonders. Just look at that first half. McHenry scored only two of .their points on free shots, having had seven chances. Libertyville gained nine points by the same method and had 13 chances. There was your ball game. What happened the rest of the way was more boisterous, but the outcome was never in too much doubt. The visitors, scored 7 points to 6 for McHeifry in a tight period. Then came a wild fourth period in which Huemann and Caron fouled out of "the game. The whistle started tooting ip Libertyville ears in that wild fotirth quarter and McHenry picked Up ten points on fouls. " A. i. rt- N... A.? Vv-V-! All this fuss about free throws is not intended to secoAd guess the calls, nor will the final analysis show the game won on gift shots. It is intended to show that points <do pile up fast in the 1 - and - 1 system and the complexion of the game often changes because of those points. Max Sanders, a 115 pound, 5'-7" sophomore was quite a |all handler for Libertyville. He moves fast and shoots good from the outside. McHenry's passing and shooting did not come up to the full capabilities of the team arid the rebounding could not match the winners. Warrior speed was turned on at times and was beautiful to behold. But, we can shuffle this report any way and still come up with the same answer -- our Warriors were outplayed by a Libertyville team that looked real good.
