THE..McHENRY ItAINDEAEER Thursday, January 17> IW7 j&tf WaxAh. AXX- 9hea>cl That man in motion, Vernon Freund, came up with another example of his athletic prowess. This time he bowled a 642 series with games of/212-212-218. Another neat game was Dick Heuser's 266 in a 620 series. And here comes a 540 series by Clara Colmafi in the Ladies League Nite Owl group. As this is written, we are anxiously awaiting the Wednesday night finals of the county league basketball tournament being played in Harvard's new gymnasium. The Sunday party was the annual ladies' night and a jolly time, -- good food, good laughs, good fellowship. Of course, Junior Freund (der president) put certain restrictions on the press with a hint that we might not be invited to the annual steak dinner at the end of the season. But, 'twas all in fun and fun it was. .County Tournament McHenry drew a bye in the county basketball tournament played in Harvard's beautiiful new gymnasium starting last Saturday night. On Monday night the Warriors went into action and beat a hustling Richmond squad 62 to 57. Richmond went into the game with a 71 to 70 victory over Hebron in which their ace poinfmaker. Bob Christensen, had scored a record 43 points. The Warriors were so sharp in the first four minutes that they rolled on to^a 1^3 margin. Then came the old bugaboo. The Warriors started to roll up fouls as well as points. The worst blow was the accumulation of four personals by Jim Huemann who had to be lifted and saved for the final minutes when control was necessary. Fortunately, Coach Fulton found fellows to come off the bench and play a big part in the victory. There >was Ernie Useman, who was given the nod twice by his coach and each time went in to do a determined, effective job. Ernie made 7 out of 9 free throw attempts and „ made them when the pressure was at its peak. Ed Caron and John Hogan were the other boys who were called on for help and gave - it a hard dash. Ed Cepulis started at center and was the fellow who kept McHenry out in front in the first half. For all around play on offense and defense the nod goes to Matt Eichinger. When he wasn't scoring, he was setting up a shot for a mate. Matt simply played a great game in his own steady fashion. Stopping Christensen was McHenry's big task. They seemed to be doing a good job of it, but when the final tab was taken, Bob had a total of 31 points. In the first round, Crystal Lake beat Woodstock 60 to 42. Marengo had a tussle with St. Mary's before winning 40 to 38. PICKUPS-- It isn't too hard to lhe oh a small salary if yriu don't spend too much trying to keep it a secret. One fellow from Wisconsin told us that he caught, by actual count, one thousand two hundred and twenty- three, bluegills in Channel Lake this winter. We tried Lake Geneva for perch last-Saturday. We will bet there were over a thousand people on the lake that day. The fishing was good and we ended up three short of the limit. It seems that the perch are running different sizes in different parts of the lake. The fish we caught were no monsters but most of them were better than average. The fishermen who own shanties have it made. We saw one with bottled gas for heat. This is sure a luxurious methQd of fishing. Brandenberg Lake is producing a lot of fish, but 'the catch is thut it's private. Last year the owners had all kinds of trouble. We heard that some people even used counterfeit passes to get onto the lake. That did it. The owners clamped down. If the reports we hear are true, there is some wonderful fishing for the people who have connections. It is said that no cars will be allowed on the ice at Lake Geneva on week-ends this year. The reason? Too many accidents and too much crowding together with cars. We. have had no response from people interested in a fox hunt. Anyone who wishes to partake call McHenry 953. The only guns allowed will be shotguns with buckshots or BB's. Slugs or rifles would be too dangerous with a large group. H1CH&BD E. feuFF NAMED PRESIDENT.
