Major Koenig pointed out that there is a plan suitable for almost any individual. Most popular is the 8 year program which calls for only 6 months active duty and causes the least interference with fcivitfjjui occupations. This program was initially developed with the high school student in mind as it permits the student to begin fulfilling the military obligation while attending school. Tfre 6 months active duty is delayed until the individual graduates from high school. Veterans with prior service may enlist for three years, or if released from sevice after August 9, 1955, may elect to serve one^ear and shorten their 8 year obligation as Tec[ilired by the Reserve Act of 1951. Veterans enlisting for 3 years are normally enlisted with the Ute rank they held upon discharge. Personnel with no prior service who do not qualify or desire the 6 months active du|y program may enlist for 6 years and serve t^;?years active duty. ' " " •\K Major Koenig stated that all of the abo^e programs are recognized by Selective Service Boards and any person participating under these programs would not be involuntarily called into service via selective service.
