' . & PLAINDEAI^EB THEBE IN BUSINESS At a meeting held for all employees of the Ringwood Chemical corporation last week Robert Harrison of Genoa City, Wis., received a sustantial monetary reward for a suggestion which he submitted to the company in 1955. At that time, Mr. Harrison's recommendation for a change in one of the processes did not seem practical. However, the suggestion has since been implemented and (in accordance with the rules of Ringwood's suggestion award plan) an award was made now. The suggestion plan has been in existence at Ringwood almost as long as the company itself. Many worthwhile ideas have originated from it. Several times, throughout the years, suggestions have been made which did not seem feasible at the time they were submitted but were later adopted and an award paid. 'liouette snapshots your range of subject mutr-r i as your interests and imagination. Silhouette Snapshots Do you remember how much fun you used to have snipping silhouettes out of black paper and decorating the old schoolroom Ttfith your masterpieces? It seems to us we devoted a good part of February every year specializing in profiles of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington to be tacked up on the wall. ? Ever since those days, we've somehow had a nostalgic fondness lor silhouettes--a feeling that carries over into picture-taking, too. That's why we thought we'd spend a few minutes today talking about silhouette snapshots--a very special kind of' black-akid-white picture you might enjoy snapping for a change. T.iiro any other snapshot, a silhouette picture may be shot indoors or out, in the daytime or at nigl}t. But unlike the usual type of picture, this time you want the subject black and the background white. Therefore,, you have to change the normal position of your light to accomplish this "re verse" effect. And that, in brief, is the basic principle underlying all silhouette shots. Contrary to the usual rule of having the light fall 09 the subject from over your shoulder, the light must be behind the subject and coming toward your camera. For a daytime silhouette shot to., be taken indoors, stretch a sheet' over a (doorway or window, opening to a bright outdoor scene. Pose your subject in profile against this luminous white back- * ground, darken the room, and make a short time exposure. That's all there is to it--except check to see that the sheet is smooth and unwrinkled, remember to set your camera on a tripod or some other firm support, and be sure your subject holds # still during the entirer length of the time exposure. To get the same effect at night, stretch the sheet over an interior doorway and put a flood lamp behind it. Post your subject--again in profile--in front of the sheet, turn off all the lights except the flood, and make a time exposure. If you'd like to try an qutdoor silhouette, the best time to shoot it is around sunset. Your subject should be directly between your camera and thp setting sun. That way, his body will conceal the sun. (If this doesn't give you the angle you want, aim so that a tree or building will block out the sun instead.) You'll probably find it best to cut down on your exposure time a bit to keep foreground details from coming through. ---John Van Guilder BASE NEW PLEA FOR GAS EXPANSION ON BEQUESTS AREA. , Local area homeowners waiting for gas heat found their requests used as a basis for a new plea to the federal government for expansion of natural gas supplies recently in Washington. /Northern Illinois Gas company's Vice president, William J. Crowley; described as "urgent" his firm's need for an additional 145 million cubic feet of'natural gas. He told a Federal Power commission hearing that on last Nov. 30 the company had requests for space heating service covering 173,688 homes. The hearing concerns applications by subsidiaries of Peoples Gas Light & Coke company of Chicago for authority to increase their peak deliveries to distributors by more than 485 million cubic feet daily. Crowley described the request as "moderate" in view of the large backlog of home owners' .requirements. "Northern Illinois serves some 260 communities in twenty counties, including the Chicago suburban area."
